Beyond my existing network, LinkedIn was one of the first places I would look to when I was trying to fill a position requiring specific, difficult to find skills. Facebook was not as popular at the time, but I did use MySpace and recruited a few people from there as well. The challenge is in knowing how to use social media effectively as one part of your job search.
As it will likely always be, in-person networking and reaching out to your sphere of influence is one of the best ways to find a new role, but if done correctly the use of social media can complement your other job search efforts.
