The reporting team, led by Ruben Vives and Jeff Gottlieb, was hailed for “Breach of Faith,” which exposed pervasive municipal corruption in the city of Bell, Calif., and detailed exorbitant compensation packages received by city officials. In the Los Angeles suburb of 36,000, city manager Robert Rizzo had received annual compensation of $1.5 million in salary and benefits, the reports showed, with similar pay packages going to the police chief and other city administrators. Courtesy CNN. CNN may not pay for the thousands of reports sent in from around the globe, but it will honor those citizen journalists who contribute to its broadcasts with an award. CNN launched the first edition of its iReport Awards with six categories: Breaking News, Original Reporting, Compelling Imagery (photos or video), Commentary, Personal Story and Interview. And then there are the photographers whose “specialty” IS covering a broad range of subjects. One example of that is Tom Fox. Samford wins awards at 2011 Southeast Journalism Conference - News. Samford publications and students were awarded several different honors during the 25th annual Southeast Journalism Conference that occurred February 17-19 in Troy, Ala. In competition with 29 different schools from Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina and Tennessee, Samford was awarded seven total honors.

There were 331 entries in the competition covering 24 different categories. The Samford Crimson was awarded eighth place in Best College Newspaper, ahead of The University of Alabama's The Crimson White. Journalism and mass communication graduate Jordan Jarvis was awarded first place as best magazine page layout designer. Other honorable mentions went to senior journalism and mass communication major Lauren Womack for third place best radio journalist, junior family studies major Catherine Butler for fourth place best press photographer and Exodus magazine for third place best magazine.
