BBC News - Iran opposition: Over 200 'arrested' in Tuesday protest

The road leading to Mr Mousavi's house was also blocked by police vans.

Ken Ballen and Patrick Doherty - Polling in Iran Shows Real Supp

The election results in Iran may reflect the will of the Iranian people. Many experts are claiming that the margin of victory of incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was the result of fraud or manipulation, but our nationwide public opinion survey of Iranians three weeks before the vote showed Ahmadinejad leading by a more than 2 to 1 margin -- greater than his actual apparent margin of victory in Friday's election. While Western news reports from Tehran in the days leading up to the voting portrayed an Iranian public enthusiastic about Ahmadinejad's principal opponent, Mir Hossein Mousavi, our scientific sampling from across all 30 of Iran's provinces showed Ahmadinejad well ahead. Independent and uncensored nationwide surveys of Iran are rare. Typically, preelection polls there are either conducted or monitored by the government and are notoriously untrustworthy.

The final results of Iran's closely-contested 10th presidential election indicate that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has won a landslide victory. "Of 39,165,191 votes counted (85 percent), Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won the election with 24,527,516 (62.63 percent)," Interior Minister Sadeq Mahsouli told reporters on Saturday. Mir-Hossein Mousavi came in second with 13,216,411 votes (33.75 percent), he added.

http://www.stratfor.com/weekly/20090615_western_misconceptions_meet_iranian_reality By George Friedman In 1979, when we were still young and starry-eyed, a revolution took place in Iran. When I asked experts what would happen, they divided into two camps. The first group of Iran experts argued that the Shah of Iran would certainly survive, that the unrest was simply a cyclical event readily manageable by his security, and that the Iranian people were united behind the Iranian monarch's modernization program. These experts developed this view by talking to the same Iranian officials and businessmen they had been talking to for years -- Iranians who had grown wealthy and powerful under the shah and who spoke English, since Iran experts frequently didn't speak Farsi all that well. The second group of Iran experts regarded the shah as a repressive brute, and saw the revolution as aimed at liberalizing the country.

Western Misconceptions Meet Iranian Reality | STRATFOR

By George Friedman Successful revolutions have three phases. First, a strategically located single or limited segment of society begins vocally to express resentment, asserting itself in the streets of a major city, usually the capital. This segment is joined by other segments in the city and by segments elsewhere as the demonstration spreads to other cities and becomes more assertive, disruptive and potentially violent. As resistance to the regime spreads, the regime deploys its military and security forces.

Russia, Ahmadinejad and Iran Reconsidered | STRATFOR

By George Friedman At Friday prayers July 17 at Tehran University, the influential cleric and former Iranian President Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani gave his first sermon since Iran's disputed presidential election and the subsequent demonstrations. The crowd listening to Rafsanjani inside the mosque was filled with Ahmadinejad supporters who chanted, among other things, "Death to America" and "Death to China." Outside the university common grounds, anti-Ahmadinejad elements -- many of whom were blocked by Basij militiamen and police from entering the mosque -- persistently chanted "Death to Russia." Death to America is an old staple in Iran. Death to China had to do with the demonstrations in Xinjiang and the death of Uighurs at the hands of the Chinese.

Iran releases last British Embassy official - Telegraph

Hossein Rassam, an Iranian national, worked at the Embassy as an expert on Iranian politics. He was freed from Evin prison in Tehran on bail. His arrest, along with that of eight other Iranians who worked for the Embassy, caused a major diplomatic row between Britain and Tehran. David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, expressed "cold anger" over the treatment meted out to the local staff at the British mission. All of those detained have now been released, although it is not clear whether Mr Rassam might face further proceedings.
