Israel's top general says Iran unlikely to make bomb | Reuters

JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israel's military chief said he does not believe Iran will decide to produce an atomic bomb, describing its leadership as "very rational" in an interview published on Wednesday. Lieutenant-General Benny Gantz's characterization of Iran's rulers appeared to be at odds with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's oft-stated warnings that Islamic leaders could opt to use nuclear weapons even at the risk of devastating retaliation. "Iran is moving step-by-step towards a point where it will be able to decide if it wants to make a nuclear bomb. http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/04/25/us-israel-iran-idUSBRE83O0C520120425

Mark Hibbs • “Engage Iran” — What Does It Mean?

During the second half of this week there will be a flurry of meetings in Washington on the subject of negotiating with Iran about its nuclear program. These will include this one hosted at the Stimson Center and held by the Arms Control Association, and a discussion at the University of Maryland with former Iranian negotiator Seyed Hossein Mousavian, now a visiting scholar at Princeton.

Comments by Adm Mike Mullen, the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, sparked an angry reaction from Iran , which promised a “firm response” to US military action that would “endanger the security of the region”. The admiral did not elaborate on the plan, and was quick to say that a military strike could have “unintended consequences that are difficult to predict in what is an incredibly unstable part of the world”. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/7921548/US-has-plan-to-attack-Iran-if-needed.html

Blix: Israeli Military Strike on Iran Might be Illegal

WASHINGTON -- Any possible military action by Israel against Iran's nuclear installations is likely to violate the international rule of law, according to former International Atomic Energy Agency chief Hans Blix (see GSN , Oct. 21). Since Tehran has not launched an armed campaign on another nation, nor does it appear to be preparing for one, "it doesn't seem to me that an attack on Iran can be legally defended," he said Wednesday during a panel discussion at the Georgetown University Law Center.
Barack Obama faces no more important foreign policy decision during his presidency than whether to take military action against Iran’s nuclear program (a decision that also includes whether to give a green light to Israel to do so). Among the possible consequences of a military strike, we must consider a long-term, inconclusive war with Iran, a wider conflict across the entire Middle East, the destabilization of moderate regimes in the region and an increase in terrorism around the world. Then, too, the possible consequences of a failure to strike include a more aggressive Iran, a nuclear arms race across the entire Middle East, the destabilization of moderate regimes in the region and an increase in terrorism around the world.
