LPWAN. Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) or Low-Power Network (LPN) is a type of wireless telecommunication network designed to allow long range communications at a low bit rate among things (connected objects), such as sensors operated on a battery.[1][2] Platforms and technologies[edit] References[edit]

LPWAN: Choice Overload and Confusion. The Low Power Wide Area Network (LPWAN) space is really heating up.

LPWAN: Choice Overload and Confusion

Just in the last few weeks we have seen some exciting announcements, such as the Mobile IoT Initiative from GSM Association (GSMA) , and a new LPWAN public network named the Machine Network from Ingenu (formerly On-Ramp). As exciting as these announcements are, I do not believe they are positive developments for the LPWAN sector. There are too many competing technologies leading to choice overload and confusion. There is clearly a gap in the industry today that needs to be filled by LPWAN technologies. LP WAN Conference 2016. LPWA networks constitute an ideal solution for machine-to-machine (M2M) and the Internet of Things (IoT) applications that necessitate wide coverage and a sparing use of energy at a limited cost.

Smart City (with its sensors embedded in an urban setting), water, gas & electricity metering, e-health, connected buildings, agriculture… these are amongst the many applications that can be potentially covered by LPWA networks and that have a very bright future ahead of them. The experts are wagering on an explosion of the number of LPWA connections in the next 8 years. According to the analyst firm Machina Research, more than 3 billion LPWA-enabled M2M connections will be deployed between now and 2023, exceeding the number of M2M cellular (2G, 3G, 4G…) connections.
