State of the Internet: Summing up 2010 (Infographic)
The state of the Internet shows definite trends that should influence the way people do business online. Email, once the epitome of digital communication, has been swamped by spam. With only about one out of every ten email messages legitimate, there’s no wonder it is a dying medium. Fueled by more affordable registration costs and hosting plans, the number of Web sites and domain names continues to increase, but not as quickly as the number of Internet users. Social networking continues to rise, but the trend shows a shift away from the United States.

Although there are certainly variations between regions, some of the trends the report finds are global: Real-time entertainment dominates data consumption on both mobile and fixed networks worldwide, constituting about 43% of total Internet traffic. And social networking services make up a significant and growing percentage of mobile Internet traffic, doubling in Latin America just over the last eight months. As people look more to real-time entertainment and social networks, Web browsing is on the decline everywhere, except in Europe - the only part of the world, according to the study, that also saw a decline year-over-year in P2P traffic.

Des chiffres qui donnent parfois le tournis… On y apprend, entre autres, que notre planète compte 1,73 milliards d’internautes (et donc 5 milliards de non-internautes, on l’oublie trop souvent). En 2009, il s’est envoyé 90 000 milliards d’e-mails , dont 81 % de spam… 234 millions de sites web ont été recensés en 2009, et 126 millions de blogs. FaceBook compte 350 millions d’inscrits, et 1 milliards de vidéos sont lues par jour sur Youtube.

Pingdom tente de répondre (et y parvient bien) à ces questions dans une étude très sympa à lire, dont voici grosso modo une traduction/adaptation libre. 47 millions soit le nombre de nouveaux sites en 2009. Ce chiffre devrait encore augmenter avec l’accès à Internet de gros pourvoyeurs comme la Chine.

En moyenne, les femmes âgées de 15 ans et plus, partout dans le monde, passent plus de temps en ligne par mois que les hommes (24,8 heures et 22,9 heures respectivement); et les femmes d'âge moyen (45 ans et plus) sont responsables de l'utilisation croissante des sites de réseautage social.
