There's been a great deal of upheaval in the ebook reader market following the launch of Apple's iPad, which can be used as an ebook reader and comes with its own readily accessible electronic bookstore. While some claimed the iPad would be the end of dedicated ebook readers, ebook readers offer two features that will keep them afloat: better price and readability under a broader range of reading conditions. Amazon's Kindle is the top-selling ebook reader and today is offered in three versions.

The Nook will still be available in Barnes & Noble stores and online, but starting October 24 the e-book reader will also be available in 2,500 Walmart stores nationwide. "Walmart's millions of shoppers will have an easy and convenient way to try Nook devices in many stores and to learn why Nook is the most full-featured eReading device on the market, and the perfect gift solution for anyone who loves to read," said Chris Peifer, vice president of Digital Business Development at Barnes & Noble, in a statement. That millions-strong buyer base Peifer refers to is the perfect way for Barnes & Noble to increase competition against rivals such as the Amazon Kindle and Apple iPad .

On the eve of a "major announcement" from rival Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com reported that its latest generation Kindle is the fastest selling Kindle to date. Amazon.com said Monday that it has sold more of the new Kindle since its release June 29 than it sold of the older Kindle during the fourth quarter of last year, which included the holiday shopping season, perennially the biggest shopping period of the year. Holding to its policy on the Kindle, Amazon.com did not say how many of the e-readers it has sold. The retailer made the announcement the day before Barnes & Noble is scheduled to make what the bookseller is promoting as a major announcement. Industry observers speculate that Barnes & Noble will unveil a Nook e-reader with a color screen.
Douglas Anmuth, analyst at Barclays Capital, estimates that Amazon will sell about five million Kindle readers during this year. The combination of the redesigned device and its lower price, at $139, should be an advantage for the company. Over the next two years, sales are expected to reach 11.5 million devices in 2012. Anmuth expects the price gap to maintain Amazon safe from being affected by the iPad. According to him, the new Kindle creates a bifurcated market with cheap and narrow purpose e-readers occupying the high-end multi-purpose environment. Amazon would enjoy the benefits through Apple, as the Kindle application is still a very popular title on the iPad, so that it brings revenue even when someone acquires the competing tablet.
