How great business innovators are made (not born) You don't need to play the part of Steve Jobs and take off for an Ashram to become more creative, but two new books leave little doubt that becoming a more innovative thinker requires serious prep work. By Anne Fisher, contributor FORTUNE -- Not long ago, creativity guru Todd Henry recommended to one of his consulting clients, a high-ranking manager, that he set aside one hour a week to generate new ideas -- "one hour, predictably scheduled, no exceptions and no violations," Henry says in his book, The Accidental Creative: How to Be Brilliant at a Moment's Notice.

"This is not time to do work. This is time to think about work. " That executive's reaction, Henry recalls: "He fired back at me, 'What?! You just want me to sit around and think?! " In today's wired, 24/7 business climate, most people can relate. Let's say you're willing to try setting aside an hour a week for pondering, but you think you're just not the creative type. An essential step: Get out of your own way. How? Actu. Innovation Starts With Disruptive Hypotheses. Here's How To Create One | Co.Design. A disruptive hypothesis is an intentionally unreasonable statement that gets your thinking flowing in a different direction. It's kind of like the evolutionary biology theory of "punctuated equilibrium," which states that evolution proceeds slowly and every once in a while is interrupted by sudden change.

Disruptive hypotheses are designed to upset your comfortable business equilibrium and bring about an accelerated change in your own thinking. The ability to ask, "What if? " is an essential part of every executive's skill set. Contrast this with the more traditional definition of 'hypothesis,' which is a best-guess explanation that's based on a set of facts and can be tested by further investigation. What Do You Want to Disrupt? To meaningfully differentiate yourself from everyone else in the same space, you have to define the situation in the industry, segment, or category that you want to challenge. That's it. What Are the Clichés? Searching for Clichés What Can You Invert? CEOs say innovation is most important factor for growth, leadership, strategic integration, accountability required.

Disruptive versus Radical Innovations. Clayton Christenson’s seminal The Innovator’s Dilemma is now 10 years old, and its central idea of “disruptive innovation” is now part of the everyday language of innovation. Recently, I finally read the book after having loosely tossed the term around for a few years. I was shocked to discover that I had misunderstood the concept and made glib assumptions based on sloppy journalistic references. Properly penitent, I began using the term correctly and discovered, to my further shock, that nearly everybody else around me was also using the term incorrectly. The innovator’s dilemma is this: a company that does everything by the book — listening to customers, managing by facts, being disciplined about costs and quality, and so forth — can get blindsided by an innovation that rapidly takes away its markets, because it was doing everything right. Examples The Disruption Pattern Why this happens is as straightforward as it is inevitable.

Delphion Research intellectual property network - international and US patent search database. Patent. Overview A patent is essentially a limited monopoly whereby the patent holder is granted the exclusive right to make, use, and sell the patented innovation for a limited period of time. The U.S. Patent Act, 35 U.S.C. §§ 1 et seq., was enacted by Congress under its Constitutional grant of authority to secure for limited times to inventors the exclusive right to their discoveries. See Article I, Section 8, Clause 8. Granting exclusive rights to the inventor is intended to encourage the investment of time and resources into the development of new and useful discoveries. Requirements for Patentability The five primary requirements for patentability are: (1) patentable subject matter, (2) utility, (3) novelty, (4) nonobviousness, and (5) enablement.

Patentable Subject Matter The patentable subject matter requirement addresses the issue of which types of inventions will be considered for patent protection. Utility The second requirement for patentability is that the invention be useful. Novelty. Veille Technologique et Analyse brevets. Institut National Algérien de la Propriété Industrielle. A patent is an intellectual property right granted by the Government of the United States of America to an inventor “to exclude others from making, using, offering for sale, or selling the invention throughout the United States or importing the invention into the United States” for a limited time in exchange for public disclosure of the invention when the patent is granted. There are three types of patents. Utility patents may be granted to anyone who invents or discovers any new and useful process, machine, article of manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof.

Here is the process for obtaining a utility patent. Design patents may be granted to anyone who invents a new, original, and ornamental design for an article of manufacture. Professor of Marketing at the Stanford Graduate School of Business Failure is a dreaded concept for most business people. But failure can actually be a huge engine of innovation for an individual or an organization. The trick lies in approaching it with the right attitude and harnessing it as a blessing, not a curse. I’ve coined two terms that describe how people view failure: the type 1 mindset, and the type 2 mindset.

The type 1 mindset is fearful of making mistakes. The type 2 mindset is fearful of losing out on opportunities. We generally start out with the type 2 adventurous spirit as children. So how do you get people and corporations to shift from 1 to 2? One approach is to engage them in rapid prototyping — the process whereby they brainstorm wild new ideas, and then quickly develop a physical model or mock-up of a solution. To make inspiration work as a motivator, take a look at Cisco Systems. Also on Stanford Knowledgebase: Schumpeter: The innovation machine. Please Login or Register.
