A little text-heavy and lighter fare than I normally post, but this one is just fun to read through. There are a handful of stats included, and the doughnut charts and bar charts are easy to understand. Like many of the infographics I’ve posted lately, it’s missing a URL at the bottom for readers to find the original post, a copyright statement and listing the designer! From the the rise of social networks (like Facebook) to the fall of world leaders (like Hosni Mubarak). We've seen the spread of social media to all corners of the globe and reported on its profound impact and influence on nearly every aspect of our daily lives. During that time, Mashable has grown up as well, from a small, one-author blog about web tools and emerging social networks to the web's largest independent news website dedicated to covering digital culture, social media and technology. The infographic below documents just some of the major events we've reported on over the past six years.

What digital, social media or technology news events had the most impact on you? Infographic design by David Foster. Hashable vs Mashable : differences. If you follow technology through social media, you've probably heard of Mashable, a rapidly growing news blog that covers social tech. Last month, a new social network emerged, bearing a similar, Seuss-sounding name: Hashable. Since you've got so many Twitters and Tumblrs, TechCrunches and PopCrunches, and Wordles and Squirtles (isn't that a Pokemon?) To keep track of in social media these days, I put together a handy infographic to help you square away the ones that rhyme with "Splashable.

" Related social media sites I predict will be invented in 2011: Splashable (analytics for measuring the impact of social media campaigns) Smashable (social music hit maker) Bashable (Gawker, but where anyone can make fun of anyone) Clashable (social network for making challenges) Trashable (share your computer's recycle bin files with friends!)

[INFOGRAPHIC] If you've spent any amount time watching your Facebook or Twitter feed stream by, it should be obvious that the world is creating a lot of data. But because all that data is really just a collection of ones and zeros it can be hard to actually visualize how much is really there. Sure, we can put a number on it, like 1.8 zettabytes being created and replicated (as in copied to DVDs and shared in the cloud) this year alone — a number that doubles every two years, according to a recent study by IDC and EMC.

But how much is that, really? Not only is data itself ethereal and hard to visualize, but the numbers are so gargantuan that they quickly become too abstract to grasp. One way to put it all into perspective is to hypothetically plug all that data into physical objects we all recognize. That 1.8 zettabytes of data, for example, would require 57.5 billion 32 GB iPads to store. The infographic below contains a few more mind-blowing comparisons to help you make sense of the numbers.
