Now I even expect to hear a whole crowd laughing when I make up a joke… Seriously enough, I really fell in love with this sitcom. I will probably talk about it later, but today I just want to give a toast to Sir Barney Stinson! Barney is the one who publicly lives up to its vicious standards. Last Words. Spoilers for last night’s How I Met Your Mother coming up: When the last episode of How I Met Your Mother ended with Marshall getting the news of his father’s sudden death, I gave the show credit for, unlike many sitcoms, being willing to engage real emotions and not-so-funny passages in life.
It’s one thing, though, to end a funny episode on a sharp turn into drama, and another to follow up on that tragedy for a full episode. “Last Words” was a worthy effort that didn’t flinch from the repercussions of the story development, but while it also built to a strong ending, it went through some rough patches getting there. It’s not wrong or unrealistic to combine humor with a funeral. Grieving often involves not just tears but laughter—funny memories, cathartic moments and the jokes you share with other mourners to break the tension.
In the first category I’d put, as crass as some might have seen it, Barney and Ted’s attempt to distract Marshall with guy-hit-in-the-nuts videos. Oh Honey ! (Feat Katy Perry) Spoilers for last night’s How I Met Your Mother following: The moment that “Oh Honey” indicated it would focus on Zoey, I actually exclaimed aloud, “I do not give a crap* about Zoey!”
(*Quotation bowdlerized for MSM-website standards.) So you probably have a sense of where I stand on the Zoey-Ted relationship. It’s not that I particularly care about the quest for the Mother at this point (Alan Sepinwall has a quick explanation of the reasons that, without serious retconning, she is not She); I just don’t feel that the show has established the chemistry between the characters the way it has with some of Ted’s previous girlfriends. (As far as I’m concerned, Victoria will always be the one that got away.) But as an individual episode, “Oh Honey” was a pretty solid piece of How I Met Your Mother engineering, so I’m happy with that. And bonus points: the episode actually managed to use the stunt-casting of Katy Perry well!
