Rowling's announcement of Pottermore points us towards a new context for literacy, a context where the book and therefore our habits of reading are evolving through the affordance of digital tools and digital texts. Watching this video introduction by Rowling herself speaks to these changes: The trademark for Pottermore shows the leveraging of the social and the connected: “providing multiple-user access to a global computer information network, [...] on-line chat rooms and electronic bulletin boards for transmission of messages among users in the field of general interest [and] on-line facilities for real-time interaction with other computer users concerning topics of general interest.” When you couple this with the eBook release, this shifts the notion of the reading experience to one aligned with How People Learn and what Kevin Kelly calls Booking: Booking produces relationships.

Perhaps a little clue somewhere that will lead people to a branded "coming soon" webpage that will attract 100,000s of Twitter followers within hours. Once again, JK Rowling and her marketing team have left the rest of the publishing world standing while she blazes a trail into the record books.

Rowling announced the launch of Pottermore, a new website meant to bring all-things-Harry Potter to the Web. It was revealed in a leaked memo yesterday that a central focus of the site would be an online gaming experience developed by the company Adam & Eve that will include real-world prizes such as magic wands secretly scattered throughout Britain and the United States.
But the launch revealed that the site will be much more than that, though it does appear to include some gaming elements. When Potter debuted, it changed the publishing world. JK Rowling shocked and thrilled her fans and the publishing industry on Thursday by announcing details of Pottermore – an interactive website which will not only have new material, but will also be the only place selling the Harry Potter novels as digital downloads.
At a press conference in London, the author ruled out writing an eighth Potter novel but said she had written around 18,000 words for the website, with more to come, about the characters, places and objects. "I had more than half of the new material already written or in note form," she said. "I dug some out of boxes. " While the announcement of new stories excited her followers, it was Rowling's long-awaited ebook announcement that may be even more of a moment for the publishing industry as digital books grow in popularity. No other retailer will be able to sell the Potter ebooks – including Amazon, which has been at the forefront of ebook sales. But Geller said other authors could follow suit.
