Haiti. Haiti i/ˈheɪti/ (French: Haïti [a.iti]; Haitian Creole Ayiti [ajiti]), officially the Republic of Haiti (République d'Haïti; Repiblik Ayiti[7]), is a Caribbean country. It occupies the western, smaller portion of the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antillean archipelago, which it shares with the Dominican Republic. Ayiti ("land of high mountains") was the indigenous Taíno name for the island. In French, the country is called "La Perle des Antilles" (The Pearl of the Antilles), because of its natural beauty.

Haiti's regional, historical, and ethno-linguistic position is unique for several reasons. With 10.4 million people, Haiti is the most populous full member-state of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). History[edit] Pre-European history[edit] The five caciquedoms of Hispaniola at the time of the arrival of Christopher Columbus.
