Heart & Lung: The Journal of Acute and Critical Care - Lifestyle adjustments of adults with long-term implantable left ventricular assist devices: A phenomenologic inquiry

Objective To explore and describe the lifestyle adjustments made by adult recipients of a long-term implantable left ventricular assist device (LVAD). Methods A phenomenologic inquiry was used to uncover the lifestyle adjustments of 7 men and 2 women, ages 31 to 70 years, who had an LVAD for more than 3 months after hospital discharge. Results An overarching theme, “adjustment takes time,” represents the lifestyle adjustments of the study participants. Conclusion This study provides insight into the patient’s perspective regarding the challenges faced in living with an LVAD.

Challenges Thoratec's Proposed Acquisition of HeartWare International. The Federal Trade Commission has authorized a lawsuit to block Thoratec Corporation’s proposed $282 million acquisition of rival medical device maker HeartWare International, Inc., charging that the transaction would substantially reduce competition in the U.S. market for left ventricular devices (LVADs), a life-sustaining treatment for patients with advanced heart failure.

Challenges Thoratec's Proposed Acquisition of HeartWare International

Thoratec currently has a monopoly on the commercial sale of LVADs in the United States, and the FTC’s administrative complaint alleges that Thoratec seeks to maintain its monopoly by acquiring HeartWare, thus eliminating the only significant threat to Thoratec’s continued dominance of the LVAD market. The Commission will seek a preliminary injunction in federal district court to stop the transaction and limit the harm to competition, pending completion of the administrative trial. Thoratec, based in Pleasanton, California, is the world’s leading supplier of LVADs. Me and my operation: heart transplant. The NHS undertakes 151 heart transplants a year.

Sex Improves After LVAD Implant - in Cardiovascular, CHF from MedPage Today. Heart failure patients' sexual health improved with their physical health after implantation of a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), results of a small study showed. After receiving the device, the nine patients included in the study reported improved sexual functioning, adjustment of their sexual activity to their health status, and increased nonsexual intimacy, according to a report in the November/December issue of the Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing.

The patients also reported an increased sense of "connectedness and intimacy" with their partners, even in the absence of sexual intercourse, Linda Marcuccilli, MS, RN, of Wayne State University in Detroit, and colleagues found. "This study provided insiders' perspective of sexual functioning and intimacy among patients living with long-term implantable LVADs," they wrote in conclusion. The only published information to date focused on LVAD recipients' desire for and participation in sexual activity, the authors continued. Advanced-HF patients would consider elective LVAD. Ethical Analysis of Withdrawing Ventricular Assist Device Support. Ethical Analysis of Withdrawing Ventricular Assist Device Support. Mayo Study: Withdrawing LVAD Support Is Ethical - Health Blog. By Katherine Hobson High-tech medical devices can raise tricky ethical questions — just consider the left ventricular assist device (LVAD). The pricey device essentially takes over the function of the left ventricle, helping a heart to continue beating when it would otherwise fail. But what happens when patients become very, very sick and are essentially being kept alive by the LVAD? Is turning off the device more akin to euthanasia or taking someone off a ventilator?

In a study published online in Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Mayo researchers come down firmly on the side of the latter, describing 14 cases where patients or their health-care surrogates requested the assist device be turned off. The researchers write that in the U.S. Dr. Chaudhry on CNN regarding Dick Cheney's LVAD Placement.
