DNScat (pronounced "D-N-S cat") is a "swiss-army knife" tool to tunnel traffic through DNS servers. It provides a bi-directional communication through DNS servers, and in conjunction with PPP, can be used to set up a virtual private network (VPN). DNScat, like a swiss army knife can be used for a variety of purposes, including: penetration testing of networks behind firewalls sending messages though firewalled networks setting up a VPN though firewalled networks learning how to detect covert channels through DNS servers and more... The idea of DNScat was started by NSTX , which performs IP tunnelling over DNS.

OnionCat creates a transparent IP layer on top of Tor's hidden services. It transmits any kind of IP-based data transparently through the Tor network on a location hidden basis. You can think of it as a point-to-multipoint VPN between hidden services. OnionCat is a stand-alone application which runs in userland and is a connector between Tor and the local OS. Any protocol which is based on IP can be transmitted. http://www.cypherpunk.at/onioncat/wiki/OnionCat
