His answers are a timeless treasure trove of wisdom and insight on all that design is and should be. I’m particularly taken with this bit affirming remix culture and combinatorial creativity: [Is design] a creation of an individual? LEVITY. Gabriel Garcia Marquez. For Colonel Aureliano Buendía it meant the limits of atonement.

He suddenly found himself suffering from the same indignation that he had felt in his youth over the body of the woman who had been beaten to death because she had been bitten by a rabid dog. He looked at the groups of bystanders in front of the house and with his old stentorian voice, restored by a deep disgust with himself, he unloaded upon them the burden of hate that he could no longer bear in his heart. Opening bars of East St. Louis Toodleoo … at times loud and clear then faint and intermittent like music down a windy street…. The room seems to shake and vibrate with motion…” That was how William S Burroughs introduced the world to the ‘Interzone’ in his heroin-and-hashish-soaked 1959 novel ‘Naked Lunch’. Those few bars of Duke Ellington were just the beginning. Kurt Cobain was such a big fan that he played discordant guitar on a spoken-word performance called ‘The “Priest” They Called Him’.

While Burroughs lived all over the world, including in London and in Tangier, in north Morocco, the city that inspired ‘Interzone’, he is perhaps most associated with the New York scene that he inhabited with fellow poets and writers like Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac. Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore moved to New York as a teenager to become a part of this scene. What was your first impression of Burroughs? I used to live near him in New York City.
