A companhia afirma que o objetivo da rede, projeto desenvolvido por mais de um ano por Vic Gundotra, vice-presidente da área social do Google, é permitir que os usuários utilizem suas conexões entre as pessoas na web de modo mais parecido com a vida real. Visualmente, a rede social é dividida em círculos de amizades, permitindo que o usuário arraste seus contatos para o grupo e que compartilhe conteúdos específicos com aquele grupo.
