Google+ gets a new API just for Hangouts

Google has just launched a developer preview of the new Google+ Hangouts API. The new API is just one component of the Google+ platform. It will allow developers to quickly build real-time applications and to create their own own experiences with and around Hangouts. This means that you’ll be able to run your application — a polling app, an avatar-changing plug-in, a game, you name it — directly inside a Google+ Hangout. To integrate your application with Hangouts, simply register your built application with Google and specify which person or people on your team can load it into their Hangouts. Since this release is still just a developer preview, devs are limited as to who can load each application.

Google is using the preview period to collect feedback that will be used to improve the API; the company warns that the Hangouts API functionality is going to change in the weeks and months ahead.

Google+, the Mac App

The app is a very simple one, however. “Just a ported browser,” he says, “not a native app.” Yes, we know that you can use Fluid.app to do pretty much the same thing – that is, if you prefer to do the work yourself. But Taylor says Fluid won’t be robust enough for what he plans to do with the app in the next week. Oh, really? The new app (direct download) requires Google Chrome and Mac OS X, although a handful of users are reporting trouble with installations on Lion. Taylor is a member of the Google+ Developer Program and has access to the private API’s (see 2nd update, hmm), but this app was built using the Web interface.

He also notes that this app is a just temporary solution. The one problem I’ve discovered so far in using the app is that when you click links to external websites, you sort of get stuck there. Google Plus API for Developers and Cross Social Network Applications - Web Selected - Google unveils Dart, its new programming language for web applications. 10 October '11, 10:13am Follow After months of teasing, Google has finally unveiled Dart, its new programming language for building web applications, a new platform developed with simplicity, efficiency, and scalability in mind, combining powerful new language features with familiar language constructs into easy to define code.

Google unveils Dart, its new programming language for web applications

In September, we reported that the search giant might be working on a new programming language after a raft of new domain name registrations had been made. The registrations covered ‘DartLang‘, ‘DartLanguage‘ ‘Dart-Lang‘ and ‘GoogleDart‘ in .com, .net and .org flavours. Google says that its new language will assist developers by helping “create a structured yet flexible language for web programming, make Dart feel familiar and natural to programmers and thus easy to learn, and ensure that Dart delivers high performance on all modern web browsers and environments ranging from small handheld devices to server-side execution”. Hacker Poll: Do You Want to Develop with the Google Plus API? Earlier today we mentioned that Google is looking for developers interested in Google Plus, and talked a little about what we might be able to expect from the API once it comes.
