Exclusive: Survey reveals effect of being openly gay on actors' careers

The figures are among the findings of a survey conducted by Equity investigating whether it is safe to be ‘out’ in the entertainment industry. The survey was open to all the union’s members, with the majority of those who took part working as performers. Although the report found that 81% of respondents are out in their professional life, and that 94% are honest about their sexuality to their fellow performers, only 57% list their agent as someone they are open about their sexuality to. Comments left by respondents highlight how actors feel that telling agents and casting directors will limit the parts they are offered, with most saying they worry roles offered to them might be restricted because they are openly gay. A third claim they have experienced homophobia in the industry. * Want to tell us about your own experiences?

Ev, codename Starling, is the one with biker jacket, tattoos and Betty Page haircut: No — damn you, lesbian ambiguity I see alternative lifestyle haircuts. I see the shortest fingernails ever. I see gentle hand-holding. How has Dinah not gotten on this yet? Now, while I’m pretty excited about another possible main-character lesbian lady in the DC universe, I do have some problems with the Birds of Prey reboot. The problem? I can see all of the boobs and some of the bootys: The Tit & Ass Shot I ended up reading all five of the currently-released Birds of Prey comics, and one of the things I noticed is that while there’s often at least one female character in every panel, many of the main story lines and character development-related plots feature male characters as their central points.

The extraordinary claim by Professor Stanley Wells, President of the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust, comes after gay Hollywood actor Sir Ian McKellen questioned the playwright’s sexuality. Sir Ian controversially claimed there was “no doubt” that William Shakespeare had sex with men. And Professor Wells has backed the Lord of the Rings star’s comments. “Of course Sir Ian is by no means the first to say so,” said Prof Wells. “It goes back centuries, especially because some of Shakespeare’s sonnets are unquestionably addressed to a male. Anderson Cooper: "The Fact Is, I'm Gay." Last week, Entertainment Weekly ran a story on an emerging trend: gay people in public life who come out in a much more restrained and matter-of-fact way than in the past.

In many ways, it’s a great development: we’re evolved enough not to be gob-smacked when we find out someone’s gay. But it does matter nonetheless, it seems to me, that this is on the record. We still have pastors calling for the death of gay people, bullying incidents and suicides among gay kids, and one major political party dedicated to ending the basic civil right to marry the person you love. So these “non-events” are still also events of a kind; and they matter.

The visibility of gay people is one of the core means for our equality. All of which is a prelude to my saying that I’ve known Anderson Cooper as a friend for more than two decades. Andrew, as you know, the issue you raise is one that I’ve thought about for years. Me too. Update: The Beast created a video tribute to Anderson’s work – watch it here. For the first time, Maher opens up about his sexuality in an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly. “I was nervous coming here today because I’ve just never talked about it,” Maher says, while sitting down to chat at Little Dom’s Italian bistro in Los Angeles’ trendy Los Feliz neighborhood, the area where the actor lives with Paul, his partner of nearly nine years, and their two children, Sophia Rose, 4, and Liam Xavier, 14 months.

“But, it’s so liberating. It was interesting to be coming to have a conversation that I was always afraid to have.” Despite his trepidation, he adds with a big smile: “This is my coming out ball. “I’ve never discussed it publicly,” the 36-year-old continues. Granted, Maher could have corrected his handlers, but in that instant, he decided not to.
