Aidomes.com - Domes from American Ingenuity, Inc. Constructing Our Geodesic Dome — ByExample.com. After a year of living and camping in the desert, Patrick and I decided to build a geodesic dome structure to provide us with shade and shelter from the elements. Simple picnic tents and EZ-up shelters that are commonly used just won't cut it in this desert environment. Strong and gusty winds often blow in unexpectedly and are known to mangle inadequate structures without regard.

We chose to build a geodesic dome because of its inherent stability and natural resistance to strong winds. What is a Geodesic Dome? First we did some research on dome construction to see what materials would be needed. Higher class domes offer greater structural stability and are ideal for larger dome frames. Calculating the Struts – Dome Formulas Class 2V geodesic domes are made from struts of two different sizes. For an 8 ft 7 inch dome we needed: Strut length A = 5.3 ft. (35 A struts needed) Strut length B = 4.7 ft. (30 B struts needed) Geodesic Dome Home Raising geodesic domes – Domes Northwest - Geodesic Dome Kits. Iceweasel. Constructing geodesic domes - Geiger, David S. The invention relates to geometrically shaped buildings, and more particularly, to constructing geodesic domes. A geodesic dome is a type of structure constructed with straight elements that form interlocking polygons. The structure is comprised of a complex network of polygons, usually triangles, which form a roughly spherical surface.

The more complex the network of polygons, the more closely the dome approximates the shape of a sphere. There have been many different techniques studied to construct a geodesic dome, including constructing the geodesic dome with a framework or without a framework. In general, the invention is related to techniques for constructing geodesic dome structures. Permanent structure members are added to form a permanent geodesic dome structure.

The temporary spacers may be removed from the geodesic dome structure. The invention can provide a number of advantages. Welcome to www.facts.net.au/dome brought to you by Shanethe designer, builder and occupier of a geodesic dome home in Tasmania. We built our house after 14-15 years of saving, planning and researching all initially in response to what we considered an aesthetic ideal. We had to explore seriously changing dynamics. Things such as location relevant to this architectural form have been foremost in our minds having bought and sold two other sites over the years before committing ourselves to enter into the realm of actually building.

The 14 metre diameter dome is a 3v, 3/8 Alternate Geodesic seated on a ring beam and surrounded by decking and suported on a treated pole construction. After reading through the book material available on domes it became apparent that there was very little printed on the actual maths equated in deriving multi angular strut ends and strut lengths for domes in general but more particularly pertaining to our own type of construction (ie. Cardboard Domes - Homepage: Constructing Cardboard Geodesic Domes That Will Survive Burning Man and the Black Rock Desert. This site was designed in response to people asking us how we made our domes and who were interested in making their own. The design was borrowed from a 1973 edition of Popular Science and was improved upon to meet the rigors of the Black Rock Desert. These domes have served as an effective shelter against wind, extreme heat and, once painted, rainfall.

The largest of the three domes in the picture opposite measures approximately 12' 7" in diameter and is about 6' 3" high at its center. We recommend building the largest one. All the measurements throughout this web site relate to the largest size. Feel free to contact us with any questions or comments about dome construction or the outline of this web site. They are easy to build – fast and cheap – and they are strong! Their creator was one of the coolest guys of his day, Buckminster Fuller or “Bucky” as he is lovingly known. He quieted critics of his ingenious structure by erecting enormous geodesic domes all over the world in no time at all –sometimes in mere hours instead of months or years. Serving atop mountains, sheltering Arctic radar installations, and even covering the South Pole, they have proved to be the strongest structures ever devised.

Indeed, they have survived earthquakes and hurricanes around the world, which is more than can be said for a whole lot of other structures. Click the link if you want to try to build you own mini geodesic dome … who knows, it might just lead to something great! Like this: Like Loading...
