ScienceGuide: 2011 lukken rijkere HO-rankings? U-Multirank. Students welcome a new European university information tool. BRUSSELS - U-multirank is a pioneer attempt to incorporate all dimensions of the teaching and learning process in university rankings.
The European Students´ Union (ESU) welcomes this new project that has great potentials. “U-multirank will highlight universities that have until now been disregarded in the existing measures used in global ranking systems, overlooking the strengths of those institutions. Higher education and research institutions have different profiles and missions. Any information tools developed to rate the performance of various institutions should thus reflect the multidimensional function of higher education,” says Fernando Miguel Galán Palomares, Vice-Chairperson of ESU.
How U-multirank is different ESU has before criticised conventional university rankings that give too much importance to institutions’ performance in research activities and too little to the students’ experience or the quality of teaching and learning. Het Europese instrument U-Multirank laat u HO-instellingen vergelijken en ranken naar hun profiel, zwaartepunten en kwaliteiten. Meer dan 850 instellingen met 5000 opleidingen uit 70 landen doen al mee. De droom werd in juni 2011 in kleine kring in Brussel gepresenteerd door onder meer Frans van Vught. ScienceGuide was daar bij en gasthoofdredacteur Jet Bussemaker, de HvA-rector, ging er vervolgens nadrukkelijk op in.
Bussemaker zei onder meer: "Ik vind het nuttig dat er nu veel diversere prestatie-indicatoren aan de orde komen. Europa lanceert ranking die geen ranking is. U-Multirank launched by EU commissioner. A European Union-sponsored university ranking system has gone live after around six years of development.
At a press conference in Brussels on 13 May, the U-Multirank was officially launched by Androulla Vassiliou, European commissioner for education, culture, multilingualism and youth. The ranking system, set up with €2 million (£1.6 million) of EU funding, assesses the performance of more than 850 higher education institutions across the world on five indicators – research, teaching, international orientation, success in knowledge transfer via partnerships with business and start-ups, and regional involvement. It does not produce a league table of institutions, but users are able to create a personalised ranking based on their priorities. Under the scheme, which also takes account of feedback from 60,000 students, more than 1,000 faculties and 5,000 study programmes from 70 countries are also marked on a range of activities and each assigned grades from “A” (very good) to “E” (weak).

Zowel studenten als hoogleraren wijzen de instelling aan als winnaar. De Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam en Universiteit Leiden halen eveneens hoge scores bij studenten. Dat blijkt uit het onderzoek De beste studies 2013 van Elsevier en onderzoeksbureau ResearchNed. Ruim 230.000 voltijdstudenten en bijna 2.000 hoogleraren en universitair hoofddocenten werkten aan het onderzoek mee. De oordelen van studenten zijn afkomstig uit de Nationale Studenten Enquête, die van hoogleraren uit de Elsevier Faculty Rating.
