De kick-off werd live, in het Engels uitgezonden op het internet.
‘We are first,’ zei Edward de Haan, decaan van de Faculteit der Maatschappij- en Gedragswetenschappen tijdens de opening van Nederlands eerste mooc en wereldwijd zelfs de eerste in communicatiewetenschappen. Een mooc is – zoals de naam al verraadt – een cursus die online gegeven wordt en waaraan iedereen mag deelnemen, zonder daarvoor te hoeven betalen. De Haan: ‘Er is een nieuw, op internet gebaseerd academisch onderwijs in opkomst. We hadden al video’s van lessen en lezingen op Blackboard, maar een mooc is meer dan een opname van een college. Het gaat om de cursus Introduction to Communication Science. De samenwerking met Coursera levert de MOOC van de UvA 33.000 aanmeldingen op, waar de twee voorgaande UvA MOOCs respectievelijk 5.600 en 1.600 deelnemers had. Voorgaande cursussen hadden ongeveer 70 procent Nederlandse studenten, maar nu de cursus ook via Coursera aangeboden wordt zal het percentage aan buitenlandse studenten groeien. De twee vorige cursussen hadden een slagingspercentage van ongeveer 10 procent. Dat is met deze massale inschrijving waarschijnlijk niet helemaal haalbaar, maar de UvA hoopt nu een percentage van 8 procent te halen. Veel deelnemers haken af in de loop van de cursus, dus het grote aantal inschrijvingen zegt nog weinig over het succes van de cursus.
Uva lanceert als eerste in Nederland een 'MOOC': massive open online course - Tech & Media. UvA start eerste online college. De Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA) vierde gisteren een klein feestje. Niet met gratis bier of dure concerten, maar door online live een fles champagne open te trekken. De reden? De Amsterdamse universiteit startte als eerste van Nederland een Massive Open Online Course: een reeks colleges die online te volgen zijn, inclusief opdrachten, literatuur en een afsluitend tentamen dat een bewijs van deelname op kan leveren.
Er hebben zich tot nu toe 2.700 studenten aangemeld voor de gratis cursus Communicatiewetenschappen, via deze site. Eerder hadden zich al tienduizend deelnemers aangemeld voor een online cursus Rechten die de Universiteit Leiden in mei zal starten. Nederland moet mee in die trend en het online onderwijs inpassen in het publieke domein. Dat betoogde José van Dijck, hoogleraar mediastudies aan de UvA, afgelopen weekend in NRC Handelsblad. ‘Nederland zou voorop kunnen lopen in manieren om online educatiemiddelen in het publieke domein beschikbaar te maken en te houden, om zinvolle elementen in te zetten in onderwijspraktijken en uit te vinden wat werkt en wat niet.’
Als Nederland dat niet doet, vreest van Dijck dat al het online hoger onderwijs straks omgeven wordt door reclameboodschappen. Volgens de hoogleraar mediastudies is duidelijk dat de initiatiefnemers van veel van deze websites ‘datagestuurd leren commercieel exploiteerbaar’ willen maken. Knappe koppen Een andere inkomstenbron voor deze websites is volgens Van Dijck mogelijk geïnspireerd door LinkedIn. FutureLearn is daarmee de eerste grote Britse concurrent van grote open onderwijs consortia in de Verenigde Staten. Concurreren met de VS Martin Bean, de collegevoorzitter van de Open University noemt het in The Guardian onacceptabel dat Groot-Britannië met haar goede universitaire reputatie nu achter loopt in de ontwikkelingen en innovaties in het hoger onderwijs. Het terugbrengen van het aantal herkansingen tot twee per jaar, de verplichting tot het halen van 60 ECTS in het eerste jaar en het zoveel mogelijk serieel invullen van het curriculum in plaats van parallel. Uit het onderzoek dat door de Open Universiteit in opdracht van het Innovatieprogramma Open Educational Resources van SURF en Wikiwijs is uitgevoerd blijkt dat men al wel volop met deze nieuwe ontwikkeling bezig is, zeker in het WO op strategisch niveau. Geen gezamenlijk beleid In het WO is slechts 29% van de respondenten van mening dat deze ontbreekt. In het HBO blijkt men hier heel anders naar te kijken. Profilering of docent? Futurelearn will be independent but majority-owned by the OU. A UK-based platform for massive open online courses (Moocs) to rival established providers in the US has been launched by The Open University.
Futurelearn will carry courses from 12 UK institutions (see list), which will be available to students across the world free of charge. It will follow in the footsteps of US providers including Coursera, edX and Udacity, which offer around 230 Moocs from around 40 mostly US-based institutions to more than 3 million students. The new platform will operate as an independent company, majority owned by The Open University, although details of other investors have yet to be confirmed. Simon Nelson, a key player in the development of BBC's online offerings, including the iPlayer, has been recruited to head up the new company. "There has been rapid and widespread growth in open online courses but until now UK universities have only had the option of working with US-based platforms," Mr Nelson said.

"At the moment foreign students' perception of UK universities is: wonderful history, great tradition, really good teaching, but a bit boring. UK universities to launch free degree-style online courses. Students generally receive a certificate for completing the courses, but do not receive academic credit toward any conventional degree qualification. Courses typically involve students working through set assignments online, including video lectures delivered by academics at the institutions offering the courses, before evaluating one another's work. Specific details of the courses on offer through Futurelearn will be announced "early in the New Year". Universities Minister David Willetts said he welcomed the move by British universities to create their own rival platform: "The UK must be at the forefront of developments in education technology.
" He added: "Massive open online courses present an opportunity for us to widen access to, and meet the global demand for, higher education. This is growing rapidly in emerging economies like Brazil, India and China. " In fact, some British institutions are already offering Moocs through the established American platforms.
