LeNewz – a realtime coverflow-style iPhone news reader. LeNewz, developed by Paris-based Triviumsoft, offers a more visual way of browsing news on the iPhone.

leNewz – a realtime coverflow-style iPhone news reader

A “DemoPit Audience Choice” at TechCrunch Europe’s recent GeeknRolla event, the app is built on Triviumsoft’s ‘Eaagle‘ text mining and mapping technologies to deliver a real time keyword map of the most important topics in each of six news categories: Sports, Economy, Politics, Life, Technology and Celebrities. Users can then tap on the topic they are interested in whereby they’re presented with a coverflow-style way of navigating the individual headlines and articles. Visually, it’s quite a fun way to consume news – see video below. In terms of content, leNewz draws from a large selection of mainstream media and blogs from the US, UK and France, although a future upgrade will let users tailor the app to their specific interests by defining their ‘favorite’ data sources.

Lingueo. Guillaume, Arnaud and Johann, the three congenial founders of the language teaching platform Lingueo just sent me the great news that they got their first funding of 500k Euros from three business angles.

Lingueo

To me it was just a question of time as the company had been selected by the French magazine “Challenge” as one of the top 100 start ups to invest in a couple of weeks ago. Lingueo was up to now a bootstrapped company founded in 2007 by Guillaume Le Dieu de Ville, Arnaud Portanelli and Johann Querne. The guys put their own money in this company and took a lot of time and effort to develop the tools of the platform before they decided to get external funding. Up to now the growth of the platform was purely viral. One source for new teachers and students is the monthly Polyglot party for university students in Paris. Balloon. Stribe. Stribe had a good 2009.

The service that aims to make it as simple as possible for any site to add a social network on top of their existing website was first unveiled in September of last year at TechCrunch50 in San Francisco. Shortly thereafter, in December, the service won the startup competition at LeWeb in Paris. Now they’re hoping 2010 will be even better. Smartdate secures €2m so you can date friends of your Facebook f. [France] Paris based dating service Smartdate has raised €1.7 million with European VC 360 Capital Partners.

Smartdate secures €2m so you can date friends of your Facebook f

Smartdate, which previously secured Angel investment from four international Business Angels for a total of €300,000, was founded by Fabrice Le Parc, who also launched be2.com in France and Benelux in 2006-07. This €2 million total amount of seed funding (one of the largest in France lately and one of the largest for a dating site) will be mainly used to market the service as they have an objective of one million users before the end of the year. Smartdate basically wants to use Facebook Friends as a criteria for your dating search.

Using Facebook Connect to log in to Smartdate, you search for single people among friends of your friends. The search called “Smartsearch” will be then influenced by the community (a now classical “others who liked the same profiles as you also liked the following…”). The company has been expanding internationally for the last year, with offices in Spain, Italy and the UK in addition to their Aix-en-Provence headquarters. Founded in 2004 by some of the former management team from Lastminute France and Orange, VoyagePrive has become the leading invitation-only travel site with over 4 million members. Their users benefit from reductions of 30-60% on exclusive luxury travel deals and packages, which the company guarantees to be at the lowest price at the time of purchase – otherwise users are reimbursed the difference. Rather than flooding their members with offers, the company strategically proposes 10-15 offers per week – on a first-come first-served basis.
