5 Ways to Encourage Independent Reading - The Secondary English Coffee Shop

The SuperHERO Teacher here, taking over The Secondary English Coffee Shop blog for the week. I'm excited to discuss a topic that many teachers, including myself, struggle with-- convincing students to read independently. For many students, reading becomes a chore. They don't see the beautiful words on the paper, but rather the words on an inevitable worksheet that is soon to follow. As ELA teachers, we have the opportunity to change that!

Big Ideas » Calling all student innovators — What’s your Big Idea?

As one of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious social impact contests, Big Ideas provides up to $300,000 directly to students each year for their groundbreaking initiatives. Armed with the training and seed funding provided by Big Ideas, student teams have gone on to secure over $150 million in additional funding for their for-profit, nonprofit, or hybrid ventures. For many students, Big Ideas serves as the first step in turning a dream into a viable product, service, or organization. Undergraduate and graduate students receive valuable feedback, work with mentors at the top of their fields, and have multiple opportunities to expand their professional networks. This year’s contest also features a brand new category: Hardware for Good. Big Ideas has come a long way since its founding. Instruction emphasizes reading comprehension, writing fluency, and vocabulary study through the use of a variety of literary and informational texts encompassing a broad range of text structures, genres, and levels of complexity. Texts used for instruction focus on a wide range of topics, including content-area information, in order to support students in meeting the knowledge and demands of increasingly complex text. Students enrolled in the course will engage in interactive text-based discussion, question generation, and research opportunities.

Sometimes the student is also provided with a word bank, listing the missing words, while other times they are not. The task is for the student to fill in the missing words. This is a great activity to help the student develop reading comprehension skills. It is necessary for the student to read the passage carefully and consider the context to try to determine what words would best fill in the blanks.

This also helps develop and assess the student's understanding of parts of speech and vocabulary. There are a lot of pre-made cloze activities and worksheets to be found, but what can be really useful is the ability to create these yourself. Thankfully there are several free online tools you can use to generate your own cloze activities. Option #1 - Cloze Test Website Website - Here's how to use this tool: If you selected "Interactive" you will now get a live version of the cloze test.
