Lipstick on a Pig: Why Bail-outs Fail and People Power Will Succeed - Financial Services Information - Searching Finance. Why bail-outs fail and people power will succeed‘Lipstick on a Pig: Why Bail-outs Fail and People Power Will Succeed’ is the first of a new series of books by Zopa co-founder Simon Deane-Johns (aka ‘The Pragmatist’) that take a subversive and irreverent look at how the relationship between society and its institutions is changing, fundamentally and forever - how we, as individuals, are personalising the one-size-fits-all existence traditionally offered by our institutions; and what the impact of this trend will be on our financial system, politics, unions, the church and beyond.
Irreverent it may be, but the series deals with some of the most serious and far-reaching issues facing us today. Why start with our financial system? Because, like it or not – and recent impromptu campsites demonstrate that most of us do not like it – our financial system is supposed to be the beating heart of our society, yet it’s badly broken. Banking Blog » Finovate Spring 2011 Roundup. Last week I headed out to San Francisco for Finovate Spring.
Finovate is my favourite conference of the year for a few reasons. I actually attend the demos and am not in meetings the entire time; the demos are a short 7 minutes – more than enough time for an analyst to make a quick judgement; and finally, it is a true showcase of bank innovation. It’s a mix of companies, some are 2 guys in a garage, others are small companies, and a few are established players. The range of solutions on display is interesting, exciting, and thought provoking. This year, Finovate Spring was extended into a 2 day event with 64 companies presenting their wares. Three key themes emerged from the conference: Bill pay is a commodity.
P2P and other payments are being pitched in an effort to drum up interest. Small Businesses have online needs that aren’t being met. Rewards Programs are all the rage. The question is which of the presenting companies did I like? Commenting on tweets coming from a conference that I didn't attend may seem as bogus as someone recommending a book based on a book review and not having read the book. It’s just that every day brings news and commentary that underscore the importance of financial marketers stepping up their game and sharpening their awareness of developments in this space. Some input for your consideration today comes from Finovate Fall 2010, a conference that offers an opportunity for 50-plus fintech companies to present short video demos of their innovations. The goal of this visibility is to gain customers, venture capital funding, partnerships and media coverage.
