He studied at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City (1968–69); earned a BFA from the San Francisco Art Institute (1969) and an MFA from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles (1972); and was a professor at the University of California, Los Angeles (1984–2003). Paul McCarthy’s video-taped performances and provocative multimedia installations lampoon polite society, ridicule authority, and bombard the viewer with a sensory overload, of often sexually-tinged, violent imagery. With irreverent wit, McCarthy often takes aim at cherished American myths and icons—Walt Disney, the Western, and even the Modern Artist—adding a touch of malice to subjects that have been traditionally revered for their innocence or purity.

Dans Treehouse Kit, Guy Ben-Ner propose une relecture désopilante du mythe de Robinson Crusoé et de notre société du prêt-à-emporter. L’installation est composée de deux éléments : une sculpture modulaire de bois, en l’occurrence l’arbre, et une vidéo dans laquelle l’artiste incarne Robinson lui-même, paré de ses attributs symboliques : une longue barbe et… un bermuda bleu fleuri ! Parodiant les vidéos de démonstration et l’illusion de « construire » en suivant un mode d’emploi, notre Robinson des temps modernes démonte l’arbre et, par un habile système, le remonte en meubles domestiques, chaise berçante, table, parasol, lit !

Since then, she has received numerous grants and awards, including an AVEK-award for important achievements in the field of audio-visual culture (1997), the Edstrand Art Price (1998), a DAAD fellowship (1999), honorary mention at the 48th Venice Biennale (1999), the Vincent Van Gogh Bi-annual Award for Contemporary Art in Europe (2000), and a five-year grant from the Central Committee for the Arts (2001), as well as the Artes Mundi Prize (2006).
