Www.mitchellmedia.co.uk » Xerte. I’ve been working independently and with TechDis and Nottingham University helping to develop, promote and support Xerte for quite a while now so it seemed appropriate to establish a dedicated Xerte page linking to various resources and examples etc. I started to put some video tutorials together partly to support my f2f training sessions but also for the wider benefit of the Xerte community. The introduction and first episode in the series covers the Tools & Terminology, aimed at teaching staff rather than developers and introducing the various tools and terminology. The original collection of screencasts and other resources have been available for quite a while now but I plan to add a number of additions over the next few weeks and months so check back regularly. If you’re interested in using my services for Xerte training, customisation, additional templates, learning object development please contact me via my contact page.

Www.mitchellmedia.co.uk » Blog Archive » Why Xerte is the best thing since Lobster! At the JISC Learning and Teaching Practice Experts Group meeting in October I delivered a showcase session summarising the components and benefits of Xerte and Xerte Online Toolkits – the fantastic tools developed by Julian Tenney and Pat Lockley at the University of Nottingham. I’ve been a member of the experts group since quite early on in its life together with some other colleagues with an FE background and although I knew most of those FE colleagues were already aware of the Xerte tools and in some case actively using the tools, I wasn’t quite sure how many members from the HE sector were already aware of or using the tools. So the formal title of my showcase was: No cost, No skills, No barriers, No excuses! E-Learning authoring for everyone with Xerte Online Toolkits. You can view the Xerte Learning Object here >> Within that LO and particularly for my FE colleagues I had another title which was: Why Xerte is the best thing since Lobster!

Xerte Online Toolkits is an easy-to-use tool developed by the University of Nottingham, UK, which helps non-technical staff to create accessible, multimedia e-learning materials (including, for example, web guides, 'how to' guides, demonstration materials, as well as more traditional e-learning materials for teaching purposes).

Once you have installed Xerte Online Toolkits on your server, all objects created in Xerte Online Toolkits are given a stable and unique URL. The software automatically builds into all objects the option for users to change the colour of the background, the size and type of text, the ability to navigate entirely by keyboard, and text-to-speech (currently only when viewed in Internet Explorer) to read aloud the object's contents. Originally Xerte was a desktop software for developers, but with the help of JISC TechDis the easy-to-use templates in Xerte Online Toolkits are designed for non-technical staff to use easily.
