Trolls Pounce on Facebook’s Tahrir Square

But the crackdown isn’t limited to physical spaces where the protest movement congregates. Ever since Mubarak restored internet service on Wednesday, the most important dissident Facebook page has seen a curious flood of pro-regime Wall posts, sowing disinformation. Some of the new up-with-Mubarak commentary at the Facebook page We Are All Khalid Said is classic concern-trolling: people wringing their hands over how Egypt’s dictator deserves better than calls for his downfall.

Some is pure abuse, questioning the loyalties of the page’s administrator. And some are blatant attempts to disrupt the protests by claiming upcoming rallies have been canceled.

Not all stations were happy with the decision to hand over broadcast frequencies to the channel, with Egyptian journalist Nabil Sharaf Al-Din dubbing Qatar "Israel of the Gulf," during a Tuesday broadcast on Egyptian Satellite. "Al-Jazeera is tightly controlled by [Qatar's]Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which uses the channel to push the agenda of [Israeli President] Shimon Peres," the presenter accused, saying the emirate hoped the favor of Israel and the US would turn it into a regional power. Egypt goes dark as last Internet company pulls the plug

Al Jazeera's Abderrahim Foukara. For 30 years, Mubarak's government has been saying that if they opened up the political game in Egypt, then the main beneficiary would be the Muslim Brotherhood, which would threaten not just the interests of Egypt, but the interests of the United States in the Middle East.

The fear of the Muslim Brotherhood is shared by many people inside of Egypt in the wider Arab world, and obviously in the West, including in the United States. What we have seen in Egypt over the past two weeks is what many Egyptians describe as a revolution, led not by the Muslim Brotherhood, but initially by disaffected young Egyptians who want better living conditions, but they also want democracy. While many observers on Tumblr have focused on the Al-Jazeera reporter's thorough evisceration of State Department official PJ Crowley's carefully constructed talking points, there's an interesting moment at 0:50 in which Crowley declares Mubarak's attempts to constrain Egyptian access to the Internet as a violation of a basic human right: "We want to make sure that Egypt is not interfering with the use of social media," Crowley said.
