ElBaradei unveils own crisis plan for Egypt’s economy. Who you callin’ lazy? In the actual city that never sleeps, 1 am traffic is not an uncommon sight on weekdays.

Who you callin’ lazy?

Cairo’s main roads will continue to buzz into the night with families and their (all too) lucid children, and even the sizable parking lot of giant supermarket Hyper One will remain overfilled with shoppers’ cars long past midnight. The question naturally arises: How does anyone get to work the next day? According to a UBS bank 2009 global study, titled Prices and Earnings, Cairenes somehow manage it. Not only that, the study reveals that compared to the other 72 international cities examined, residents of Cairo on average work the highest number of hours per year – 2373 hours to be precise. Many did, is the short answer; often Egyptians themselves. However, the influential political economist Adam Smith put it succinctly in his The Wealth of Nations, when he pointed out that if laborers cannot acquire property, they will work as little as possible, and eat as much as they can. And why not? Egypt's inflation rises to 11% amid food price hikes.

Egypt gets short-term relief, investors still wary. Billions of dollars in aid for Egypt will offer short-term relief to its battered economy but will not be enough to reassure investors worried about what the government will look like after a September election.

Egypt gets short-term relief, investors still wary

Pledges of support from the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, Western states and wealthy Gulf Arabs have provided welcome respite for Egypt after tourists and investors fled in the wake of protests that ousted Hosni Mubarak on 11 February. Commitments could top US$25 billion, including soft loans and bond purchases. But what is not clear is when this money will land, what strings will be attached and whether Egypt's interim government can find enough viable projects to absorb the funds.

Adding to the uncertainty, Egypt holds a parliamentary vote in September whose outcome is far from clear. The group seen most likely to dominate is the Muslim Brotherhood, which has done little to outline economic policy or a national program. "We have the usual metrics with benchmarks.
