Microsoft's Craig Mundie wants driver's licenses for the Internet - The Curious Capitalist - TIME.com. I just went to a panel discussion about Internet security and let me tell you, it was scar-y. Between individual fraud, organized crime, corporate espionage and government spying, it’s an incredibly dangerous world out there, which, according to one panelist, is growing exponentially worse. These are incredibly complex problems that even the smartest of the smart admit they don’t have a great handle on, although Craig Mundie, Microsoft’s chief research and technology officer, offered up a surprisingly simple solution that might start us down a path to dealing with them: driver’s licenses for the Internet.

The thing about the Internet is that it was never intended to be a worldwide system of mass communication. A handful of guys, all of whom knew each other, set up the Web. The anonymity that has come to be a core and cherished characteristic of the Internet didn’t exist in the beginning: it was obvious who was who. What Mundie is proposing is to impose authentication. Using a variety of highly refined reflected optical microscopy techniques, we have developed a large collection of full-color photomicrographs (photographs taken through a microscope) illustrating the intricate and surprising patterns observed on integrated circuit surfaces.

For decades, semiconductors have been doubling in power every 18 months or so, according to Moore’s Law, a rule of thumb coined by Intel co-founder Gordon Moore. Intel was long the innovation leader in the $200+ billion semiconductor industry, but is facing tough competition from the 64-bit architecture of Advanced Micro Devices. Wikimedia Foundation. Bebo. The website, at the height of its popularity, overtook Myspace to become the most widely used social networking website in the United Kingdom,[4][5] eventually registering at least 10.7 million unique users. The site was also extremely popular in Republic of Ireland – at one point it claimed to have over a million Irish users, and data from Alexa ranked it as Ireland's most-visited site. [citation needed] Its popularity saw it sold to AOL for $850 million in 2008.

We dream up internet projects then put our code where our mouth is and put them out into the wild. We're not scared of failure; in fact, we embrace and learn from it.

Our objective is to have fun, build something cool (and hopefully worthwhile), and, every now and then, something truly amazing. We are all employed by Monkey Inferno Inc, the incubator. Once each project is launched it is incorporated as a sub-company and we all receive options in it. Each project has no more than two full time developers, who work side by side cranking out code. But as we receive options in all the sub-companies, everyone is motivated to help every project become a success, whether they happen to be assigned to the project or not. Monkey Inferno has no outside investors, we're fully self-funded by Michael and Xochi Birch who sold Bebo to AOL in 2008 for $850m. We're Hiring. The Great Library of Alexandria, O. Von Corven, 19th century The Royal Library of Alexandria, or Ancient Library of Alexandria, in Alexandria, Egypt, was one of the largest and most significant libraries of the ancient world. It was dedicated to the Muses, the nine goddesses of the arts.[1] It flourished under the patronage of the Ptolemaic dynasty and functioned as a major center of scholarship from its construction in the 3rd century BC until the Roman conquest of Egypt in 30 BC.

With collections of works, lecture halls, meeting rooms, and gardens, the library was part of a larger research institution called the Musaeum of Alexandria, where many of the most famous thinkers of the ancient world studied. The library was created by Ptolemy I Soter, who was a Macedonian general and the successor of Alexander the Great.[2] As a symbol of the wealth and power of Egypt, it employed many scribes to borrow books from around the known world, copy them, and return them. Saqqara Bird In 1898 a small bird like figure, known as the Saqqara Bird, was discovered during the excavation Saqqara, Egypt’s Pa-di-lmen tomb.

Upon discovery it was hardly considered noteworthy and thrown in a box labeled “wooden bird.” After the invention of flight in 1903, many years later the bird was rediscovered by an specialist on ancient artifacts, Dr Khalil Messiha. The debate is whether or not the Saqqara bird is in fact zoomorphic or potential evidence that the ancients conceived and or exercised modern flight. 9. World Public Library Association. Gallery - "Imagine a World Without Free Knowledge"... Queen Boudica. "Boudicca" redirects here. For the cruise ship, see MV Boudicca. Boudica's husband Prasutagus was ruler of the Iceni tribe. He ruled as a nominally independent ally of Rome and left his kingdom jointly to his daughters and the Roman emperor in his will. However, when he died, his will was ignored and the kingdom was annexed as if conquered. Boudica was flogged, her daughters were raped, and Roman financiers called in their loans. The crisis caused the Emperor Nero to consider withdrawing all Roman forces from Britain, but Suetonius's eventual victory over Boudica confirmed Roman control of the province.

Boudica then either killed herself so she would not be captured, or fell ill and died. Interest in the history of these events was revived during the English Renaissance and led to a resurgence of Boudica's fame during the Victorian era, and Queen Victoria was portrayed as her namesake.[8] Boudica has since remained an important cultural symbol in the United Kingdom.
