It's All Happening at the Zoo School: Innovative Education with Practical Applications

VIDEO: Taking Class Outdoors with Environmental Education Running Time: 10 min. When Mark LaCroix and his classmates at Minnesota's School of Environmental Studies (SES) discovered patches of buckthorn crowding out native species at a local park, they didn't just write up their findings as a science report to be read by the teacher and then handed back. They compiled data in a form familiar to government agencies and submitted a technical report to local officials, who used the information to direct park gardeners to eradicate the invasive plant. At SES, learning is about becoming an expert and solving real problems -- doing in-depth, interdisciplinary research using innovative technology that results in practical applications. School/Zoo Partnership SES opened in 1995 in the Minneapolis-St. Denver School of Science and Technology : DesignShare Projects. “The school was to be an inquiry-driven, project-based school where students would be assessed by the work of their own creation.

What was frightening to me was, even with that idea in hand and a lot of experience with progressive curricular design, I had little idea how to make that idea come to life in the physical spaces of the building.” - Chris Lehmann “Designing School 2.0: A Study of Philadelphia’s Science Leadership Academy” by Chris Lehmann, founding Principal of Science Leadership Academy (opened fall, 2006) Note: Like many in the school design community, we had heard about a push to create the school of the future in Philadelphia over the last few years after Paul Vallas arrived in the district with a mandate to spark enormous systemic change across the entire public school community. Sooner or later, every teacher and administrator fantasizes about starting a school of their own. Looking Through the Swimming Pool for Something Different Entirely “Yep, it really is.”

Science Leadership Academy. High Tech High. High Tech High Facilities. High Tech High facilities are developed and owned by HTH Learning, a private non-profit supporting the development of HTH schools.

High Tech High Facilities

The original High Tech High opened in September 2000 in a newly renovated 38,500 square foot facility at the former Naval Training Center in San Diego (Point Loma), CA. Since then HTH Learning has renovated buildings for five additional schools at the same location, creating a "village" of three high schools, two middle schools, and an elementary school. HTH Learning develops facilities that support its design principles of personalization, common intellectual mission, and adult-world connection. The facilities are attractive, economical, flexible, professional, and responsive to the needs of their inhabitants. HTH buildings are visited by architects, school planners, and builders nationwide, who see our facilities development approach as a highly successful model.

Ecoliteracy.org When the Building Is the Teacher Since 2010, Center education program director Carolie Sly has been engaged with Rainforth Grau Architects, GreenWorks Studio, and the Lodi Unified School District in California's Central Valley on design of a new STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics] Academy for the district.

When the Building Is the Teacher

In February 2012, the project received an Award of Excellence from the Coalition for Adequate School Housing and the American Institute of Architects, which commended the sustainable design and clear link between physical design and curriculum. The planned campus's many sustainable features will include maximizing natural daylighting and indoor environmental quality, incorporating bioswales for management of surface water, and a goal of achieving grid-neutral status through energy conservation and production of electricity through photovoltaics and wind power.
