It is funny how things work. The reusables industry has been toiling for years and years to raise awareness about reusable packaging. Now, in a single announcement, eBay has generated a tsunami of publicity about reusable transport packaging with the introduction of its new reusable box. For example, a key word search comprised of “eBay reusable box” as of today has generated around 314,000 Google search results, versus only 294,000 for the much more mature term of “reusable packaging.” The reusable box in question is the eBay reusable box, designed by the eBay Green Team. eBay has purchased 100,000 of them in three sizes for a pilot test.
Depending on the level of activity, the human body generates about 60 to 100 Watts of energy in the form of heat, about the same amount of heat given off by the average light bulb. All day, every day, the body is switched on. About 250,000 human light bulbs hurry through Stockholm Central Station each day, burning brightly as they rush to catch trains, giving off enough heat to raise the temperature of the cavernous building to a constant 22-25 degrees Celsius (71-77 degrees Fahrenheit). This is too warm, and so the station uses power to cool the air inside . This is doubly wasteful: wasteful of the excess warm air, and wasteful of the power used to cool that air. The energy-efficient answer, devised by state-owned Swedish property developer Jernhusen, is to draw the excess body heat out of the station through heat exchangers in the ventilation system.
The body heat from Stockholm central station’s 250 000 daily commuters now warms the office block next door, slashing heating costs by 25%.
