Tim Best. Portfolio | Wight & Company. The Ann Reid Early Childhood Center (ECC) is a 45,000 square foot LEED Silver school situated on an 11 acre site. The goal was to create a welcoming and nurturing environment for the students while fostering the efficiency and benefits of shared equipment and support spaces for the faculty and staff. Extensive data collection on learners’ habits, behaviors and needs impacted the design solution. The one-story, steel-stud building with masonry and cement-board siding is designed to accommodate up to 480 students, ages 3 through 5, and sets a new benchmark for designing educational environments geared towards these young learners’ diverse needs. Built to advance the district’s desire to encourage children to be more engaged with the natural environment, its numerous windows provide an abundance of natural light, which creates a feeling of openness and establishes a direct connection between the indoors and outdoors.
