October 19, 2013 update: It's been 10 months since the last update, but it appears I didn't miss much. Wizards has printed new this year until August. Icosahedrophilia. I apologize for that, and wanted to give you a little behind-the-scenes look at the reasons for the trouble … and ask for your help. Several months ago, I moved to a new web hosting company that offered unlimited storage, unlimited bandwidth, and more accessible (i.e., 24/7) tech support than my prior web host. I talked with a salesperson beforehand and cleared my use case—podcasting—with the salesperson before committing.
Fast forward a few months to August 2013. All of my websites unexpectedly go dark. After arguing with my hosting company for a while about the definition of “unlimited”—to me that means “unlimited,” to them it means “within normal expectations”—and doing some comparison shopping (you might be surprised how many “free” services aren’t free), I ended up migrating the websites to a virtual private server rather than a shared server. These Wizards had also made a Grimoire, full of all their secrets, and left it open so anyone could use their spells. The Golem learned the magic of the Grimoire and soon grew to rival the Wizards. And that is the story of Pathfinder, the roleplaying system that seems to be falling through the cracks in a lot of this discussion about the new edition of Dungeons and Dragons. Paizo (whose logo is, of course, a golem) was licensed by Wizards of the Coast to publish the Dungeons and Dragons periodicals, Dragon and Dungeon, and then pulled the plug on that licensing agreement when they decided to pursue an online pay-wall strategy with Dungeons and Dragons Insider.

I tend to agree that the game has gotten more and more simple as it had more renditions made, but it has made it much easier to bring in more people to play the game. I know I'll get flamed for it, but I'm glad they made 4th. Specifically wizards were too weak in early levels and WAY to OP in later levels to have a fair game, and that always bothered me, but with the at-will powers that's not a problem anymore. Although I'm thinking about tweaking stuff for later levels too. I will say that with 4th edition I have made the effort to include things from 2nd and 3rd edition (I'd probably bring in 1st as well but I never played it) in an effort to keep the game more fluid. I'm not a huge fan of fourth just because the classes all feel too same-y for me.

In at least two of those settings (Greyhawk and Forgotten Realms) the gods are further divided into the wider pantheon and separate non-human pantheons. This is why it weirds me out: Even though the general pantheon is never described as such, the very existence of “separate gods for non-human peoples” implicitly labels the general pantheon as “the human pantheon.” This becomes even clearer once you consider that many of the gods from these general pantheons are either described as having human-like avatars or as being humans that arose to divinity.
