Aluminum forest. Exhibition: Open the Tower. Moses Bridge / RO&AD Architecten. Architects: RO&AD Architecten Location: Halsteren, The Netherlands Client: Municipality of Bergen op Zoom Material used: Accoya wood Project Area: 50 sqm Photographs: Courtesy of RO&AD Architecten The West Brabant Water Line is a defense-line consisting of a series of fortresses and cities with inundation areas in the south-west of the Netherlands. It dates from the 17th century but fell into disrepair in the 19th century. When the water line was finally restored, an access bridge across the the moat of one of the fortresses, Fort de Roovere, was needed.

This fort now has a new, recreational function and lies on several routes for cycling and hiking. It is, of course, highly improper to build bridges across the moats of defense works, especially on the side of the fortress the enemy was expected to appear on. The bridge can’t be seen from a distance because the ground and the water come all the way up to its edge. Text provided by RO&AD Architecten.

Barret 001 Hotel Proposal / Comac. Should the Bohemian hotel be a vertical tower of 100 meter high? Or 100 meters long? Given the nature of the site, located in the gothic area, Comac proposed a horizontal design in the Plaza del Angels in front of the MACBA. Barret 001 is based on two fundamental principles: Firstly, to offer quality of life, enjoying the richness of the site by creating a public space and a sky floor over the Gothic area. The second objective is to create a shadow on the Plaza del Angels known for its burning heat.

More images and architects’ description after the break. By creating a horizontal slope, each room of the Bohemian hotel has a view of the city. The Main floor is organized as one space where there can be frequent social gatherings. By connecting the MACBA plaza to the Bohemian Hotel, this inclination creates a public space in the shadow of the Catalan sun. Academy of art. Flashback: One of Archdaily’s goals is to bring you up to date information about projects that are being designed and constructed around the world. We’ve created a new category to cover inspiring projects that were constructed between the 1990′s and the early 2000′s. Architects: Wiel Arets Architects Location: Maastricht, The Netherlands Project Year: 1993 Photographs: Jan Bitter Conceived as an extension to the existing Rijkshoge school, the Maastricht Academy of Art & Architecture provides new spaces for the school of visual arts and architectural design.

The building is an incision into the body of the city, an entirely new and foreign organism invading its urban context, a process akin to the operation of a virus. Yet it is set in a discreet, almost camouflaged relation to the city, providing an enclosed public space that achieves an intimate and secluded condition from the main areas of urban activity. Biscay library. Architects: IMB Arquitectos / Gloria Iriarte, Eduardo Múgica, Agustín de la Brena Location: Bilbao, Spain Project Year: 2007 Client: Diputación Foral de Bizkaia, Bizkaiko Foru Aldundia Project Staff: Pedro Múgica, David Salvador, Mariano Ortega, Josu Iriarte, Gorka Apraiz, Iñigo Barberena, José Luis Olaeta, Felix Aguiriano, Diego Poza, Iban González Project Consultants: Ingeniería INARGEST (Structure), Javier Mendieta (Air Conditioning) Main Contractor: UTE Balzola Urazca Photographs: Åke E:son Lindman The project, resulting from an open competition of ideas, influences a complete unit of Bilbao’s urban grid.

The area includes an existing building, which has had to be reformed, and an open space, permitting a new construction in response to the demand of the client. The main argument of this project is to organize the “old” and the “new” in three constructed volumes which belongs to the three major, yet clearly separated functions. The new construction includes two new built up volumes. Harbor brain building.
