Mar 11, 2015 keita suzuki's rice bowl revisits ancient japanese standards keita suzuki’s rice bowl revisits ancient japanese standardsall images courtesy of product design center the ‘rice bowl’ by tokyo-based keita suzuki of product design center fits perfectly in user’s hands. the 12 centimeter diameter of the bowl is derived from the average diameter of a japanese person’s hand when a half-circle is made with the thumb and middle finger. height is also accounted for; the piece is six centimeters tall which creates an ideal 2:1 ratio between the hand and ware. ‘rice bowl’ measures 12cm in diameter, and 6cm in height for a ratio of 2:1 the ratio between the pointing finger and thumb is exactly 2:1, same as the design (arita) potter: fujimaki seitou, material: ‘amakusa’ white porcelain, ‘hishaku-gake’ glazing technique (kiyomizu) potter: ito seitojo, material: red clay soil, ‘kohiki’ engobe finish (shigaraki) potter: yamatatsu togyo, material: ‘koshigaraki’ clay ‘hosome’, no glaze; vitrified.
