On Friday, Prime Minister Donald Tusk completed the about-face his government had started on the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA). “I sent a letter today to all the party leaders who cooperate with the Civic Platform and the Polish People's Party in the European People's Party, including prime ministers, the [German] chancellor, presidents of some countries and the leadership of the European People's Party, with a proposal to reject ACTA in the shape that was negotiated by the European Commission,” Mr Tusk told a news conference Friday evening. The PM admitted that the position prepared by Polish officials on ACTA over the last few months was “reckless.” “I was wrong. … It would be a sin to maintain a mistaken belief … the agreement does not correspond to the reality of the 21st century. The battle for the right to property should also respect the right to freedom.”
Protests against Internet censorship will blanket Europe this weekend, while Germany and Latvia announced Friday they would put the brakes on signing a copyright treaty that has sparked controversy across the continent. More than 200,000 people have committed to attending rallies in 200 cities to protest the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or " ACTA ." "The map of planned protests is just breathtaking," said Holmes Wilson, co-founder of anti-ACTA group Fight for the Future . "You've got tens of thousands of people taking to the streets in small cities, in countries where large street protests are not common." Proponents of ACTA say that the treaty will help fight global copyright theft.
The EP has produced an easy-to-follow infograph on the legislative procedure for ACTA to help people who are confused about how a decision will be made on this controversial anti-counterfeiting agreement. It also includes a handy timeline with important dates. The agreement has proved controversial because people are concerned about how it will affect civil rights. However, it will not be able to enter into force in the EU without the EP's approval. The European Commission announced on 22 February 2012 that it will refer ACTA to the European Court of Justice for a ruling on the agreement. However, British Social-Democrat David Martin, who is responsible for steering the agreement through Parliament, says Parliament should prepare its own questions for referral to the court.
