Anirudha Surabhi, an industrial design graduate, has invented Kranium, a lightweight outdoor sports activity helmet made of cardboard as an alternative to standard polystyrene helmets, which have a poor safety record and go straight to landfill. Kranium weighs less than a standard polystyrene helmet, but offers four times greater impact protection, according to Surabhi, who has tested it against British Standards EN 1078. He said a version of his eco-friendly helmet could eventually be dispensed through vending machines for city cycle hire schemes. "You can’t dispense polystyrene helmets because they are unsustainable, which is proving a real headache, in terms of safety, for Boris Johnson and the London Cycle scheme," said Surabhi.
