In a crackdown on pirated piñatas some months ago, officials from the attorney general’s office and the federal police seized more than 100 of the papier-mâché party accessories, Spider-Man prime among them, and took into custody several real-life piñata vendors as well. The authorities said the raid was a response to a complaint filed by Marvel Entertainment, which owns the rights to the characters in question. Hulk, another Marvel character, was also overwhelmed by the men in black that day, as was Captain America. But the story line got a twist when it turned out that the raid might have been as questionable as the piñatas that were seized. The attorney general’s office said it had no record of Marvel’s calling for such an operation, which existing law required before a raid could be conducted, and the company insists it had nothing to do with it.

AFP: Force India to appeal F1 copyright case
SEPANG, Malaysia — Force India said on Sunday they would appeal for a higher pay-out after Caterham were found to have copied bits of their Formula One car, comparing the case to the explosive "Spygate" scandal. The Indian team were awarded 25,000 euros ($33,200) in damages this week after a High Court judge in London found Caterham used Force India computer files stored at an engineering company when developing their debut car in 2009. Force India were also ordered to pay 850,000 euros in unpaid fees to the engineering firm, Italy's Aerolab. Deputy team principal Robert Fernley said the sum was deposited with the court long ago.I apologize for the repost/edit. I feel that I should start over and restate my earlier contribution, due to...well, a lot of circumstances. This version isn't as volatile, but hopefully retains the gist of the sentiment, while further explaining some of the muddier details.

Zynga Tries To Trademark 'Ville' | Techdirt
from the there-go-my-plans-for-faceville dept Back in January, we wrote about Zynga -- who had a reputation for copying the games of lots of other companies, including a blatant copying of the name "Mafia Wars" from another gamemaker (for which Zynga just settled a lawsuit) -- and was now becoming quite the trademark bully itself , specifically going after Blingville, for daring to use the suffix "ville." Zynga has no registered trademark on "ville" (though, in trademark law, you do not necessarily need a registered mark, and can quite frequently get by with a common law mark), but the folks over at Fusible have noticed that Zynga has recently filed for the trademark on "ville" in Europe . The application is to cover three different classifications, including for online computer and electronic games (of course). As legal battles go, this one is far from child’s play. from the infringement-insanity dept I have to admit that I still have trouble with the idea that choreography is subject to copyright. For the life of me, I can't figure out why that makes any sense. It's come up from time to time, such as when the "inventor" of "The Electric Slide" sought to pull down videos on YouTube.

A palomino mare named Star grazes on Debbie DeLouise's clover meadow, hanging out at a salt lick there and frolicking with her foal Holly. But a legal dispute may imperil their pastoral bliss: It threatens to close the only store where Ms. DeLouise can buy food for Star and Holly. Without their special diet, the horses would waste away and turn green. A virtual horse.
