Build Your Own Multitouch Surface Computer

The process of building a multi-touch computer is far from over, though, we need to get the software installed and configured so that we can actually use the thing. The central software that powered our rig is Touchlib , an open source library which takes the visual data received by the camera and parses it into touch events, which can be used by other programs to provide multi-touch control. Some programs implement this library directly, allowing for standalone multi-touch apps, while others, such as those written in ActionScript, require an extra software layer to allow the program to receive touch input. DIY Multi-touch screen

The DIY projects out there can be very good and it does not have to be that expensive. Add the rise of the 'smartphone' and possibilities are endless. Tonfilm is Humanworkshops' touch screen specialist. One of his projects is the now famous 'interactive multitouch cocktail bar'. Pasta&Vinegar. September 15th, 2012 | No Comments » Time for presenting summer project outcomes! In July and August, I spent two months in the Media Design Program department at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California. As I mentioned few weeks ago, the project was called CURIOUS RITUALS: Gestural Interaction in the Digital Everyday and focused on the postures, gestures and habits related to digital devices such as laptops, cell phones, remote-controls, sensors or robots.

Along with Katherine Miyake , Nancy Kwon and Walton Chiu , we produced two things: (1) A book (.PDF, 3.1Mb) documenting current digital gestures (based on a preleminary field study in European cities and in Southern California, with essays from Dan Hill and Julian Bleecker), (2) A design fiction film that speculate about their evolution in the near future. Reactable. Reactable. Reactable The Reactable is an electronic musical instrument with a tabletop Tangible User Interface that has been developed within the Music Technology Group at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain by Sergi Jordà, Marcos Alonso, Martin Kaltenbrunner and Günter Geiger.[1] In the end of 2010 a mobile version of the Reactable was released for iOS giving many opportunities to musicians for multi-touch sequencing.[2] Basic operation[edit] The Reactable is a round translucent table, used in a darkened room, and appears as a backlit display.

By placing blocks called tangibles on the table, and interfacing with the visual display via the tangibles or fingertips, a virtual modular synthesizer is operated, creating music or sound effects. Tangibles[edit] How the reactable Works" Simple blocks are a common symbol of childhood creativity, curiosity and intelligence.

How the reactable Works"

Placing building blocks next to or on top of each other allows children to let their imagination run wild and create any number of structures on a playroom floor. If letters, pictures or colors are added to the blocks, children can add words, patterns and other arrangements into their designs. If we add a table under those blocks, the building process all of a sudden becomes much more collaborative. Although we typically think of a table as a simple object -- one that's useful, but maybe a little static -- it's actually yet another important symbol. Tables can be a fun space, a place where people gather to exchange conversation, ideas and work. Taking the two basic concepts of blocks and tables, four graduate students from the Univesitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Spain, added music to the mix and designed something called the reactable.

Patten Studio: Design and Technology for Interactive Experiences

Many of Patten Studio‘s interactive projects are built on top of the Sensetable. Sensetable is a hardware platform for bringing the computer interface off of the screen and onto the tabletop. It tracks the positions of objects on a tabletop surface and provides them as inputs to software running on a computer. The Sensetable concept and initial prototypes were developed by the Tangible Media Group at the MIT Media Lab.
