The Future of Photo-Sharing Apps. The tiny Instagram app grew to a gigantic 27 million users during its first year in the App Store. It has inspired real-life Instameet-ups, Instagram art shows and a community based on love for the image, where users can post and receive feedback from other visual thinkers. Instagrams are not only the new Polaroids when it comes to party pics, they've become a way for users to communicate visually, sharing inspiration and ideas (well, iPhone users anyway - the Android app is due out soon). But Instagram isn't the only app capturing smartphone users' visual imaginations. Photo-sharing apps such as EyeEm, Piictu and Cinemagr.am each offer users opportunities to connect and organize visually and categorically in non-Instagram ways.

Instagram owns the mobile photo-sharing space, so why compete with it? "A lot of our thinking starts off with the assumption that we as a platform assume that Instagram is the camera," Piictu CEO Jon Slimak tells ReadWriteWeb. EyeEm: Organize by Content. Jell-O: Facial Recognition Sampling Machine  To help launch the new Jell-o Temptations premium desert range for adults, sampling was always on the cards, but this machine takes sampling to a whole new level… It uses facial recognition software to detect the “Age” of the potential consumer, and if you happened to be too young, it would reject you, with a cheeky message reminding kids and their parents (that was the setting!)

That they weren’t old enough to enjoy the new Jell-o range, because it was designed for adults only! Strategically positioned in Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium, a location that was sure to grab the attention of hundreds of kids, it seems an ingenious way to get kids to entice parents after being rejected for a free treat, while giving each of the parents a warm smug feeling for reaping the benefits! A great idea mixed with a super smart media placement and interaction strategy. Created by CP+B. Be Sociable, Share! Project Sk8: Xbox Kinect Controlled Skateboard  We’ve seen some pretty cool Xbox Kinect experiments to date… but I don’t remember seeing an Xbox Kinect Controlled Electric Skateboard, especially one that can hit 32 miles per hour! Chaotic Moon’s LABS program set about rigging up an electric skateboard with a Samsung Windows 8 Tablet and an Xbox Kinect to deliver a gesture controlled experience like no other. The Kinect has been rigged to control the speed and breaking abilities of the skateboard based of hand gestures, body movement and distance.

Plus they call it the “Board of Awesomeness” To start, riders raise their hands up to activate the board, then push their hands forward to control the speed, pulling them back to control the brakes in it’s simplest form. Red Hot Chili Peppers: Interactive Music Video  The Red Hot Chili Peppers just took their latest music video to the next level by releasing the interactive gem above. The video incorporates a click-and-drag feature that allows viewers to explore different scenes in a panoramic manner.

Click the “Show Hints” option to reveal even more interactive layers. The non-interactive version of their single “Look Around” was released on January 26th, but the Red Hot Chili Peppers apparently have plans to go digital or go home. In addition to this interactive video, the band has a five-star rated (US iTunes) iPhone application to keep fans up to date on band news, tour info, and their twitter stream. From Arcade Fire to OK Go to Danger Mouse, we are seeing more and more bands producing interactive music videos to keep their fans engaged. It’s an emerging trend we are definitely keeping our eye on.

Joan Voight | March 8, 2012 in Share Taco Bell's huge launch of its Doritos Locos Tacos today is using an augmented reality app and QR code to amp up the social buzz around the event. The product rollout, which partners Taco Bell's parent Yum Brands and Doritos parent Frito-Lay, started at drive-up windows at midnight March 8. The new tacos are made in a nacho cheese Doritos shell. They are expected to be the biggest launch in Taco Bell's 50-year history. For several weeks Taco Bell has been relying heavily on Twitter and Facebook to generate interest in the orange-shelled tacos, including a February Tweet-Off to encourage users to retweet the product name.

The launch campaign seeks to build on that base of followers. To access the AR feature, smartphone users must download the Taco Bell app and scan the cup or box. Some of those tweets will also be featured on digital billboards in Times Square and on Sunset Boulevard in Los Angeles. Microsoft Vision 2019 HD [720p].flv. Google Glasses Will Be Powered by Android. On closer inspection, many of them turned out to be wearing tiny earpieces that connected wirelessly to their smartphones. What’s next? Perhaps throngs of people in thick-framed sunglasses lurching down the streets, cocking and twisting their heads like extras in a zombie movie. That’s because later this year, is expected to start selling eyeglasses that will project information, entertainment and, this being a Google product, advertisements onto the lenses. The glasses are not being designed to be worn constantly — although Google engineers expect some users will wear them a lot — but will be more like smartphones, used when needed, with the lenses serving as a kind of see-through computer monitor.

“It will look very strange to onlookers when people are wearing these glasses,” said William Brinkman, graduate director of the computer science and software engineering department at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.
