How it Works. Table of Contents This is a high-level, technical description of how Heroku works. It ties together many of the concepts you’ll encounter while writing, configuring, deploying and running applications on the Heroku platform. Performing one of the Getting Started tutorials will make the concepts in this documentation more concrete.
Read this document sequentially: in order to tell a coherent story, it incrementally unveils and refines the concepts describing the platform. The final section ties all the definitions together, providing a deploy-time and runtime-view of Heroku. Defining an application Heroku lets you deploy, run and manage applications written in Ruby, Node.js, Java, Python, Clojure and Scala. An application is a collection of source code written in one of these languages, perhaps a framework, and some dependency description that instructs a build system as to which additional dependencies are needed in order to build and run the application. HP has introduced advancements to its CloudSystem solutions with the means for cloud provider and enterprises to accomplish dual cloud bursting, one of the Holy Grails of hybrid computing. The CloudSystem targets service providers by giving them the ability to allow their enterprise customers to extend their private cloud-based applications bursting capabilities to third-party public clouds too.
See more news on the HP AppSystems portfolio. HP CloudSystem, announced in January and expanded in the spring with a partner program, is designed to enable enterprises and service providers to build and manage services across private, public and hybrid cloud environments. For those of you who have not heard of “The People’s Supermarket” it’s a volunteer run supermarket that has been set up in London. The process from start to finish was documented on Channel 4, which if you haven’t seen you must, heres the link.
Last week I visited the supermarket and was given the grand tour of the building to see how it operates. The one thing that really impressed me was that all the surplus food that would have otherwise been wasted was used in their kitchen and sold at lunchtime. The reason I am blogging about this is that I have been given the opportunity to see if I can generate an interest in setting up a supermarket of our own here in cardiff so the first step I have made is to set up a Mailing List to start collecting peoples email addresses who are keen to be involved. Please can you send, share and talk about this between friends and family and lets see if we can get a meeting set up for this month. Here comes the cloud bubble - The Cody Word. The government has often been accused of wasteful expenditure.
Ask any average American citizen about government expenses, and there’s a good chance you will get a derisive response which also includes a strong opinion on why citizens should stop paying taxes because they seldom get their money’s worth. Now, a new report says that indeed, a lot of government expenditure can be considered wasteful with the advent of cloud computing. According to the “Federal Cloud Weather Report” commissioned by cloud computing company VMware, the US government could save as much as $14.4 billion annually by moving to the cloud. While skeptics may point at several problems with such a move and even VMware’s own motives in capturing government contracts, there is considerable evidence to support these figures. Cloud Computing: Multi-Tenancy Misconceptions. One of the biggest benefits of the cloud, ‘Dynamic Scaling,' goes hand-in-hand with multi tenancy. If your application has a fixed group of users, you can easily predict the server load and still handle it with a typical data center. However, a large number of users, basically multi tenants, makes the cloud platform most efficient in terms of usability of the application and ‘Do More With Less Resources.' Some of the other characteristics of a typical multi-tenant application, benefited by Cloud are: Large global population working across time zonesQuite possible that at any time 100% usage is not possible, but rather 70-80% Application serves a global common process for most, but yet is customizable for local needs Multi Tenancy & Large Enterprises:Many IT groups within the large enterprise including CXOs view multi-tenant applications as the one that hosts a disparate group of individuals or organizations.

[STATS] Venture capitalists and CEOs are showing renewed confidence in the state of venture capital, especially in the IT, digital media, mobile and cloud computing sectors, according to a recently released survey. The National Venture Capital Association polled around 330 U.S. venture capitalists and 180 CEOs of venture-backed companies in order to get their predictions for what will happen in 2011. The survey, released Tuesday, paints an optimistic picture of investment in the new year. Of VCs surveyed, 51% said they expected venture investments to pick up in 2011, compared to just 24% who think it will remain the same and another 24% who think it will decrease.
Their optimism spans across both later stage and earlier stage investments, and in fact, 30% of VCs intend to increase their co-investments with angel investors. The industry that investors are most bullish about is the IT sector. Not every industry is getting the thumbs-up from VCs, though. [via CNET] 5 Predictions for Small Business in 2011. Cloud, mobile and social to ‘coalesce’ Cloud services, mobile computing and social networking will mature in 2011 and beyond before combining to form an entirely new platform, an analyst firm has suggested. These “transformative technologies” will move from early adopter status to early mainstream adoption, said Frank Gens, senior vice president and chief analyst at IDC. “As a result, we'll see the IT industry revolving more and more around the build-out and adoption of this next dominant platform, characterised by mobility, cloud-based application and service delivery, and value-generating overlays of social business and pervasive analytics,” Gens said. “In addition to creating new markets and opportunities, this restructuring will overthrow nearly every assumption about who the industry's leaders will be and how they establish and maintain leadership.”
Gens said these technologies were starting to be integrated already, with cloud and mobile linking up, and social networking hooking up with real-time analytics.
