Based on our work and research with dozens of companies, I believe there are five major stages on the sustainability journey. They overlap to some extent, and not all companies started at Stage 1 (particularly those targeting the premium-price or environmentally conscious consumer), but for most, these stages do apply. This article describes the five stages, and what characterizes each one.
