On Thursday the government will announce structural reforms and additional spending reductions, on top of the already huge cutbacks in health and education. Pre-empting the bailout conditions means the government is able to retain the illusion of sovereignty. In reality, Spain is on the brink of insolvency and under huge pressure to accept a rescue package. De iaioflautas (vrij vertaald 'straatopa's'), de seniorenafdeling van de beweging van indignados, bezetten vandaag de beurs van Barcelona. De handelaren staren zwijgend naar de demonstranten in gele hesjes die hun grootouders hadden kunnen zijn. ‘Dit is geen crisis, dit is oplichterij!’ Klinkt het. Een actievoerder zet een megafoon aan zijn mond: ‘We blijven hier net zo lang tot ons doel bereikt is. Vreedzaam, zoals altijd. We willen de beursleiding spreken en ons manifest overhandigen.’ Ondanks de herrie is de sfeer ontspannen.
