Willie Nelson: Occupy the Food System. Thanks to the Occupy Wall Street movement, there's a deeper understanding about the power that corporations wield over the great majority of us.

Willie Nelson: Occupy the Food System

It's not just in the financial sector, but in all facets of our lives. The disparity between the top 1 percent and everyone else has been laid bare -- there's no more denying that those at the top get their share at the expense of the 99 percent. Lobbyists, loopholes, tax breaks... how can ordinary folks expect a fair shake?

No one knows this better than family farmers, whose struggle to make a living on the land has gotten far more difficult since corporations came to dominate our farm and food system. We saw signs of it when Farm Aid started in 1985, but corporate control of our food system has since exploded. My Occupation - your story about your occupation.

NATO, G8 Protests: City Reverses Plan For Fine Increases As Occupiers Gather At City Hall. As members of Occupy Chicago gathered at City Hall to decry Mayor Rahm Emanuel's plans for the NATO and G8 summits -- which will take place in Chicago this May -- a source from the mayor's office told the Chicago Sun-Times that the administration is reversing plans to impose stiff fines on protesters.

NATO, G8 Protests: City Reverses Plan For Fine Increases As Occupiers Gather At City Hall

Emanuel has been criticized by Occupy Chicago and other local and national protesters for plans to double fines for resisting arrest or obstructing a police officer. The plan would have forced protesters charged with those crimes to pay between $200 to $1,000, versus the $25 to $500 fines currently in place. On Tuesday, however, Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy announced the fine increase is not happening. "We decided to pull that off the table," McCarthy said, according to the Chicago Tribune. A city hall source, who asked to remain nameless, explained further to the Sun-Times: Occupy The Spying. Occupy Drone. It's pretty well-established that Occupy Wall Street is no fan of Rupert Murdoch's media empire, but after one Occupy-friendly videographer test-flew a video-capturing drone he hopes to use to film protests, it looks like they've got something very specific in common.

Occupy Boiler Room to Get Tenants Heat, New Council Meets, More...

In Harlem, a group "occupied" a boiler room in a building where elderly, underserved tenants were going without heat and hot water. They won. After an all-day occupation on Halloween and the arrest of one protester, the landlord relented, allowing access to the boiler room. By late Friday evening, workers were clanging and banging away in the basement, dismantling the old clunker and clearing space for a new boiler, provided in part by an emergency order by the city, Blakely said. In Atlanta, a local group did the same thing on behalf of a family threatened by foreclosure.

It had been hoped that a letter from South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu to the #OWS community yesterday would sway local, diocesan, and national church leadership to soften their stance toward the movement on the basis of “the higher calling of Our Lord Jesus Christ--which they live so well in all other ways.”

@occupycafe. OccupyMoon (@OccupyMoon) sur Twitter. Occupy History. In today’s popular imagination, New England Transcendentalists such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry David Thoreau, and Margaret Fuller are known primarily as canonical literary figures, or in Thoreau’s case as a proto-hippie recluse who lived in the woods by Walden Pond and wrote a book about it. But these writers were engaged with some of the most pressing issues of their day, from abolition and anti-imperialism to civil disobedience.

It was Thoreau himself who coined the phrase “civil disobedience,” in an 1849 essay of the same name in which he argues for the morality of refusing to pay taxes to an unjust government. He spent a night in Concord’s jail for his refusal to pay the poll tax, which he felt was supporting slavery and the Mexican War, but was bailed out by a friend, and spent the next day leading a spirited “huckleberry party” through the woods around town, where “the State was nowhere to be seen.” [1] Americans of Emerson’s day were no strangers to crisis.
