UC Davis gives US Bank marketing access, perks in exchange for royalties

They can use the cards to check out books from the library and, if they choose, withdraw money at an ATM from a new US Bank checking account. The cards come courtesy of a new partnership forged between the bank and university that provides cash to UC Davis in exchange for new student, faculty and staff accounts. The university stands to gain millions of dollars in cash for student services from US Bank by giving the bank exclusive access to marketing opportunities, free advertising and signage and other perks.

Under the 10-year agreement, the more people at the university who sign up for US Bank accounts, the more money UC Davis would get. UC Davis estimates it will receive nearly $3 million over 10 years. If only 5,000 people sign up for accounts, the annual royalty is $105,000. Occupy Davis. Occupy Davis (@OccupyDavis) sur Twitter. Occupy UC Davis. OccupyUCD2. Ten Things You Should Know About Friday’s UC Davis Police Violence

The protest at which UC Davis police officers used pepper spray and batons against unresisting demonstrators was an entirely nonviolent one. None of the arrests at UC Davis in the current wave of activism have been for violent offenses. Indeed, as the New York Times reported this morning, the university’s administration has “reported no instances of violence by any protesters.” Not one. 2. Students had set up tents on campus on Thursday, and the administration had allowed them to stay up overnight. 3.

Many university police forces employ a combination of police officers, security guards and student workers. United Kingdom[edit] In the UK, universities do not have a specific police force that responds to crime on university campuses, with the exception of Cambridge University Constabulary[1] and, until 2003, Oxford University Police.[2][3] Instead most universities have a Police Liaison Officer seconded from the area's Police Service. The liaison officer can provide crime prevention and recruitment information, patrol of campus site and create links with community as part of the national Community Policing Strategy. "Not Non-Violent Civil Disobedience" UCB Chancellor Robert Birgeneau’s statement rationalizing police beatings of unarmed and unthreatening protesters relies on a contentious contrast between those who “chose to be arrested peacefully” and are to be “honor[ed]” because they “were acting in the tradition of peaceful civil disobedience,” and others who “chose to obstruct the police by linking arms and forming a human chain to prevent the police from gaining access to the tents” of their would-be encampment. The latter tactic, he writes, is “not non-violent civil disobedience.”

Overnight the discussion of Birgeneau’s letter has focused on its willingness to defend beating in the name of non-violence and its fetishization of non-violence as such. In agreement with those points, I'm also interested in Birgeneau's falsification of the history he references and, positively, in the tensions it suggests when we don’t accept such a cheap edition of it.
