Persistent criticism of Occupy Wall Street for failing to specify demands has helped obscure the fact that groups of people within the movement have been mobilizing around concrete political goals.

The latest example is a small group of occupiers who will set out tomorrow on a 230-mile march from New York to Washington, where they plan to arrive on the eve of the deadline of the congressional supercommittee. The marchers’ message to the supercommittee: cut the Bush tax cuts on the rich in order to help balance the budget and save badly needed social programs. (Those tax cuts were extended by President Obama and Congress after a fight last year.) “If there’s a message, it’s that we’re paying attention now,” says Michael Glazer, 26, one of the march organizers. Glazer is an unemployed actor from Chicago who has been sleeping in Zuccotti Park, the center of the Occupy Wall Street movement, for a month.

At first confined to New York, protests loosely defined as combating greed, excessive capitalism, and restoring democracy have spread to American cities like Boston and as far as Hong Kong. On October 1, the weekend before last, around 700 protesters were arrested in a march on the Brooklyn Bridge. In the meantime, the continuing escalation of the roughly month-long protests has begun to take a strain on police resources and succeeded to some degree in disrupting daily life in Lower Manhattan. While commentators writing from its origins as an American movement have compared Occupy Wall Street as a left-wing version of the Tea Party, others—including those claiming to speak on behalf of the movement—have portrayed the protests as an American “Arab Spring.”

Americans assaulted, clubbed, dragged, pepper-sprayed... Why? For exercising their right to free speech and assembly -- protesting the increasing concentration of income, wealth, and political power at the top. And what's Washington's response? Nothing. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court says money is speech and corporations are people. And a revolving door has developed between official Washington and Wall Street -- with bank executives becoming public officials who make rules that benefit the banks before heading back to the Street to make money off the rules they created.

Other top officials, including an increasing proportion of former members of congress, are cashing in by joining lobbying power houses and pressuring their former colleagues to do whatever their clients want. Millionaires and billionaires on Wall Street and in executive suites aren't contributing all this money out of sheer love of country.

That same day, John Stauber, the founder of the corporate watchdog Center for Media and Democracy, suggested in a Truthout op-ed that the protest could be the start of something bigger. "In Iowa an Occupy Obama movement has real potential because it could choose to become a player in the Iowa caucuses in a way that is much more than symbolic," he wrote.

"Occupy Obama activists could show up at the caucus meetings in January, for instance, and organize support for an Uncommitted slate of Occupy Obama convention activists. " In other words, determined occupiers could inject some unexpected turbulence into Obama's glide path toward being named the Democratic nominee. Occupy the Justice System: Jury Nullification. David&GoliathProject: Thanks to the @TheIndypend... Jury nullification. Jury nullification occurs in a trial when a jury acquits a defendant, even though the members of the jury believe the defendant to be guilty of the charges.

Jury nullification

This may occur when members of the jury disagree with the law the defendant has been charged with breaking, or believe that the law should not be applied in that particular case. A jury can similarly convict a defendant on the ground of disagreement with an existing law, even if no law is broken (although in jurisdictions with double jeopardy rules, a conviction can be overturned on appeal, but an acquittal cannot).

A jury verdict contrary to the letter of the law pertains only to the particular case before it. If a pattern of acquittals develops, however, in response to repeated attempts to prosecute a statutory offence, this can have the de facto effect of invalidating the statute. A pattern of jury nullification may indicate public opposition to an unwanted legislative enactment. Background[edit] A nineteenth-century jury. Occupy the Pentagon. Currently the total cost of their benefits is about $50 billion a year. Cuts to military pensions are "the kind of thing you have to consider," Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said in September. When President Obama unveiled his $3 trillion debt reduction plan the same month, it called GIs' benefits "out of line" with private employee retirement plans, saying the system was "designed for a different era of work.
