How a dentist and a corrupt French Commissioner are responsible for weird science and Kill Bill videos

I work in a competitor to Emakina and Tipik, and used to work in another, and I can tell you that both companies have done excellent work for the EC, and at least one has done cr*p wrk for the EC. And you can probably say that for just about any company in the sector. How can this be? How can the same company have such different outputs, working for the same client? The short answer is that there is no such thing as “the EC”, at least in this context. These comms projects, moreover, can be enormously diverse – from campaigns like the one that prompted this post, to projects which are fundamental to implementing EC programmes and policy. Bavaria launches new online communication strategy with Emakina

With this move, the largest independent brewery in the Netherlands kicks of its new online communication strategy. The two first markets to cross over to the new website are the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. In the coming three months, 21 other countries will follow. Bavaria’s new website is based on the idea that websites are no longer leading the consumer’s online action as a platform.

#sciencegirlthing: the PR guy's take

As important as that is, however, it's not the only thing we should do. We have to remember that the primary audience for this campaign is not scientists, it's girls in the EU ages 7 to 13. If I were a smart science person, I'd start reaching out to the advertising community - I'm a fan of my pal Liz Gumbinner, though (and this is a plug for my colleagues) the amazing team at Strawberry Frog would probably rock on this. They focus on cultural movements, and that's exactly what we need here.UPDATE II: An official word from the EC science comms spokesman: #sciencegirlthing aims to attract women to science.

The European Commission’s new campaign to encourage women into science, “Science: It’s a girl thing” launched its first phase today, with a colourful (ie largely pink) array of activities aimed at showing teenagers that science can be cool and engaging. In a science fair on the somewhat rain drenched Parliament Esplanade, teenagers can be a DJ for a day thanks to maths, test bracelets with UV lights and see the changes and build a Lego machine to save energy.

Young scientists are out in force to share their passion for science and hopefully entice people into a brilliant future career. European Research, Innovation and Science Commissioner Máire Geoghegan-Quinn launched the science initiative today, which will cover all 27 EU member states for the next three years. According to the Commission, the European Union is going to need up to one million extra researchers by 2020. And right now women comprise more than half the EU's student population and 45pc of all PhDs, but they account for only one third of career researchers. Because women PhD graduates are also still a minority in engineering and manufacturing, the Commission has launched the three-year campaign with the aim of getting teenage girls interested in studying science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects. Tackling the gender dimension “We need them to solve problems like climate change, energy and public health. Getting rid of clichés.
