Studies Show Chinese Herbs Productive for COPD

The research comes from the World Health Organization’s Collaborating Center for Traditional Medicine and RMIT University’s School of Health Sciences’ Traditional and Complementary Medicine Program. The researchers analyzed 27 studies that involving 1,966 patients. Of these, either the St. George Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ) or Cai’s Quality of Life Questionnaire was used to review the results of the application of traditional Chinese Medicine herbs on the COPD patients.

Using the Quality of Life scores, the researchers’ meta-analysis found that those taking Chinese medicinal herbs had a significant improvement in their quality of life scores as compared to no treatment. Inflammation is one of the body’s primary mechanisms for removing metabolic byproducts, debris and foreign agents.

It enables the body to remove damaged cells, neutralize toxins, and fight bacteria, fungi and viruses. We have already discussed inflammation in the section on the liver, and we will discuss it here from a slightly different angle. When we discuss the immune system, we'll examine it again from yet another angle. The main physiological components of inflammation are pain, heat and swelling. Pain is the nervous system’s response to heat and irritation when the body initiates the inflammation process to burn away offending agents. Acute Inflammation When cells sustain damage or tension from infection, wounds or poisons, allergens or other triggers, they release chemicals that start the inflammation process.

Chronic Inflammation Inflammation is always present in our bodies at low, silent levels, and this is buffered by our nutrient and defensive capabilities. Detoxification First. Using Chinese Herb Liquid Extracts. Liquid extracts or granules? Now that many Chinese herbalists are moving away from using raw, bulk herbs when prescribing for their patients, the question often arises as to what other forms of herb administration are available and how they compare. There are many factors to consider including potency, patient compliance, convenience, taste, product availability and shelf life. Practitioners that use granules/powders seem to be pleased with the results they get with their patients, but so do those using liquid extracts.

Dave Ehrlichman gives an overview of Chinese herb liquid extracts, how they are processed differently than traditional Western herb tinctures, and how to think about dosaging and conversions. We asked Dave Ehrlichman, owner of Golden Lotus Botanicals, to educate us about the extract process. At Golden Lotus Botanicals, Chinese fluid extracts are typically concentrated to a 2:1 end ratio. Generally, a tincture is concentrated by way of "dual" or "triple" maceration. Chinese Herbs for Lymphedema. Exploring the Principles of Treating Phlegm-Damp Accumulation by Subhuti Dharmananda, Ph.D., Director, Institute for Traditional Medicine, Portland, Oregon The lymphatic system runs throughout the body.

Chinese Herbs for Lymphedema

Unlike the system of vessels that transports the blood, the lymphatic system lacks independent musculature to pump the lymph through the body. Instead, the lymphatic flow occurs secondarily to the pumping action in nearby blood vessels (primarily the veins) and as a simple result of physical movements of the body. Lymph gains its contents from the blood, and the lymph vessels (which are larger than capillaries but much smaller than the smallest veins) drain the majority of their contents back into the blood stream via the thoracic duct at the base of the neck. Lymphedema (also spelled lymphoedema), is a swelling of the subcutaneous tissues by accumulation of lymph fluid (1).

Lymphedema is usually treated by a combination of non-invasive physical methods (6). Table 2. How the liver relates to chronic fatigue, age-related vision and memory loss. Treatment of gallbladder problems and alternatives to gallbladder surgery - gallbladder flushing and gallstone removal.
