Metaverse Roadmap: Pathways to the 3D Web. Metaverse Roadmap Overview - pg 1. Over the past year the Acceleration Studies Foundation (ASF) and its supporting foresight partners have explored the virtual and 3D future of the World Wide Web in a first-of-its-kind cross-industry public foresight project, the Metaverse Roadmap (MVR). We use the term Metaverse in a way that includes and builds upon Neal Stephenson’s coinage in the cyberpunk science fiction novel, Snow Crash, which envisioned a future broadly reshaped by virtual and 3D technologies. The MVR has “near-term” anticipation horizon of ten years (to 2017), a “longer-term” speculation horizon of twenty years (to 2025), and a charter to discover early indicators of significant developments ahead.

Seeking diverse points of view, our process included an invitational Metaverse Roadmap Summit, public and expert surveys, a few workshops and roundtables at major U.S. conferences, social meetups, and a public wiki. In its inaugural version, the MVR focuses on defining and exploring this major new social space. 2007. Overview.pdf (application/pdf-Objekt) What is a Metaverse? Ask the average geek what There represents, though, and he or she can tell you in an instant: It's a metaverse.

The word comes from Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, a 1992 science-fiction novel that describes a hyperrealistic digital world (the Metaverse) where people spend the bulk of their leisure time and disposable income. But it's come to serve as shorthand for a long-standing dream among tech insiders -- the vision of a parallel virtual universe in which the world's communication networks come to life. It's a scheme whose kewlness needs no explanation for the average computer hacker or sci-fi fan, and it's largely because earlier metaverse builders took the merit of their projects for granted that so many of their attempts failed. – From an Article by Julian Dibbell Business 2.0 (March 2003) Actually, it does require an explanation.

In fact, there are some basic ones that need asked: "OK, this metaverse is a game. What do you do with it? What Next? Metaverse. The Metaverse is a collective virtual shared space, created by the convergence of virtually enhanced physical reality and physically persistent virtual space,[1] including the sum of all virtual worlds, augmented reality, and the internet. The word metaverse is a portmanteau of the prefix "meta" (meaning "beyond") and "universe" and is typically used to describe the concept of a future iteration of the internet, made up of persistent, shared, 3D virtual spaces linked into a perceived virtual universe.[2] Developing technical standards for the Metaverse[edit] Conceptually, the Metaverse describes a future internet of persistent, shared, 3D virtual spaces linked into a perceived virtual universe,[2] but common standards, interfaces, and communication protocols between and among virtual environment systems are still in development.

Many of these working groups are still in the process of publishing drafts and determining open standards for interoperability. [edit] [edit] See also[edit]
