Another year, another upcoming South-by. Typically this is where you discover new music, where bands break through, and a place where stars are born. But if I hear the words "buzzband", "best new music", or "Salem" I'll vomit all over 6th Street for Odd Future to fake fall in to. Ignore the shitwave you have to tread through and you will find there are tons of amazingly talented bands and barrels of ear pleasing musical happenings at SXSW. However, there can almost be too much music to take in before you lose track of bands you actually want to remember. So last year I took a break to refresh the palette and looked towards the great comedy shows that Austin had to offer.

On January 1, 1984, PBS aired Nam June Paik's "Good Morning Mr. Orwell." The entire concept, of PBS airing a series of bizarre happenings with artists ranging from Salvador Dali to Oingo Boingo, is pretty hard to imagine nowadays. Actually watching clips from the program is even stranger. A collection of clips from the program can be seen here , and gives a slight taste of what it must have been like to watch the program back in the day.

"It is absurd that at a time when our country has a $15.6 trillion national debt and enormous unmet needs, the wealthiest people in this country have an effective tax rate that is lower than many middle-class people.
Out of no where a new Kanye West song titled “Theraflu” has dropped. Hot 97′s Funkmaster Flex played the new track which features DJ Khaled. Hit-Boy , the producer behind “Niggas In Paris” produced the song.

A tad late, sure. But I've spent the last two months holed up, catching up, with just about any film anybody said was worth your time in 2011. I've even started a film journal -- extra geeky, but it will come in handy next year. With minutes until this year's Oscars, there are a number of films I have yet to see like Melancholia (which would probably make this list) and the Artist (probably too precious, which is why it will win mucho trophy tonight), or fully digest, like Tree of Life. I actually think, though this will be one of the weakest Oscars in years, there was a lot to dig through and appreciate -- which is why I'll have a Special Consideration post in the coming days.
For a triple j mag feature story published earlier in the year - entitled ‘Music Counts For Something’; full article here - I interviewed a handful of Australian independent musicians to discuss the financial realities of pursuing their passion. One such interviewee was Australian hip-hop artist Urthboy (a.k.a. Tim Levinson, pictured right), who also performs as part of The Herd and is manager of the Elefant Traks record label. Since he’s deeply involved in both the art and business sides of music, he was well-placed to comment for the story. Upstairs at the Brisbane venue The Step Inn on April 30 2010 before his headline performance later that night, I asked him some questions - alongside my girlfriend Rachael, and a couple of Heinekens from Urthy’s rider - for the triple j mag story .

When Spotify launched its first wave of apps in November 2011, it made clear its goal to become "the OS of music," a place to find, browse, and listen to million of songs. The apps have thus far been a success, amassing over 13.1 million hours of usage since they launched. Today, Spotify is set to launch a second wave of apps to help users find music to listen to, such as TweetVine, Def Jam, Filtr, Matador Records, Domino, Classify, and a handful more.
